I just want to start by saying that I LOVE DC Comics. I love the stories and the mythology behind all of the characters. I've been a causal reader since I was a little kid and they still made The Batman Adventures comic. The Long Halloween launched me into it deeper and Green Lantern: Rebirth turned me into continuity junkie. No matter what they do, I will never stop being a fan.
That said, I will stop collecting and I plan to do so once John's has wrapped up his GL run. I love the comics but I have such a severe case of event fatigue. I'm to the point were I have to choose between just regular stories or an event. My town (Massillon, Ohio) is going down the pot right now due to this economy crisis and I was let off from my job due to poor sails so I have literally no money for events and the 1,000 tie-ins to understand it. I don't know who is making these decisions (Didio is my guess) but until he is gone, I won't be collecting.
My first point, Final Crisis. I was really excited for this series. I only bought the seven issue series and I had NO idea what was going on. I was so pissed. I felt ripped off and betrayed from the lack of attention to the story elements. I just finally finished getting the essential tie-ins I needed and I gotta say that I love it now. Even though I will say that Final Crisis is my favorite of the Crisis's, it was the most aggravating. When Infinite Crisis came out, I only got the seven issues and I got everything. I just don't think we, the buyers, have to buy all of these books to get a story. Times are hard enough and to not be able to even understand the one thing I have left to enjoy, it's kind of like "What the fuck!".
Point two, Blackest Night. I have been waiting for this story since it was hinted at after Sinestro Corps War. I thought instantly that it would be an amazing story. As it got closer and closer, more and more books were being announced. I get why there are books like "Blackest Night: Batman" (etc.) and I really want to read them...but do we really need three issues of it? The one shots for Sinestro Corps War were only one issue and they were great!
I get it. Bigger story, more books. But with times being what they are and the industry hurting as much as they are, wouldn't it make sense to try and make it more affordable? To make it so everyone (veteran readers and new readers) can afford and enjoy it. I'm still going to buy Blackest Night, but if there is a teaser for some new big event at the end or if things are left completely open for a sequel, I'm done.
So, I've decided to start this new blog soon which I'm going to title "DC Continuity for the Poor", which will make it basic and easy for new readers to come into DC Comics. It was always something I wanted someone to do but no one ever did it and I hope that it can at least help one person get into the comics without blowing thousands of dollars. My DC Continuity starts with the birth of Batman and goes all the way up to were we are now, and it fits into one comic box. I can understand almost everything, smaller characters aside, throughout DC's history.
I just wish that DC would stop with the events and focus on building the characters instead of making us follow a giant, expensive story which changes nothing in the DC world. I love Final Crisis, but what changed after it? Battle for the Cowl...awful filler until Morrison gets back onto the title with Batman & Robin (which I can't afford next with Blackest Night, so I gotta miss out).
