Laid off and out of look sailors hijack an old Russian sub to claim Nazi gold from the bottom of the ocean and their problems threaten their treasure and gold. Half sub movie, half Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Pretty good.

So yeah, much to Tazz' chagrin, I still exist and still watch movies, but lately, it's all been about Korean shows on Netflix and Star Trek: Picard. The last couple of movies I actually sat down and watched were the 2 G. I. Joe live action flicks, The Rise of Cobra and Retaliation.

The former suffered from too much re-invention and messing with core concepts like Cobra Commander being brother of the Baroness and former bestie of Duke. Plus the whole underwater base thing in the arctic was a bit too sci-fi for Joe. Don't get me wrong, I did like it, just not as much as retaliation, which nailed the shows concepts perfectly for an adult audience who grew up on the cartoon. At least they got Cobra Commander right this time. Too bad they left out Destro, but them's the strokes, folks. The Rock...well....rocked. Movie was made for him. And Bruce Willis was the icing on the cake.

The Boogens (1981)

Mysterious attacks follow the re-opening of a mine decades after a disastrous collapse. Okay creature feature which depends on the main cast being isolated and picked off. Get points off for the characters naming their little dog "Tiger." That's as dumb as naming a cat "Wolfie."

I hated RoC when I first saw it, but now appreciate some aspects (the large roster; the goofy-but-fun-OTT showing of the Pit). I love Retaliation. It's just fun. And as much as I don't like big CGI bits, I can't complain about a mountain climbing ninja battle.

Hadn't seen probably since the 80s, but picked up the blu-ray recently because I read the book (partly in anticipation of the new version coming out next month).

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)

Pretty famous John Ford movie (starring Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Vera Miles, Lee Marvin, among others) that should be rated even higher. Stewart plays a senator who tells a flashback story of arriving in a small western town as a fresh attorney at law and immediately getting violently robbed by Marvin's Valance, who seems to have free reign because of a lack of law. Wayne plays a local rancher/fast-draw who represents the rule-by-gun good side (chaotic good?) and who competes for the affections of Miles' waitress character. Watched with the fam for the 60th anniversary.

As a fan of old Westerns, I'm of course very familiar with The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. While I appreciate the film's obvious virtues, there are some flaws that bother me about it. Maybe the biggest one is that although Wayne and Stewart are great as always, at 58 and 54 respectively they're a good 25 years too old for their roles. At 33 Vera Miles could have been eight or ten years younger, but she wasn't nearly as miscast as Wayne and Stewart were.

Also the movie was shot as if it were a television episode of the time, 1962. It's in B&W, and no scene that could be shot on a soundstage was shot on location. My theory about that is the John Ford spent so much money signing Wayne and Stewart that he was forced to make the movie on the cheap.

Keeping Gene Pitney's hit song in it would have helped, but maybe Ford couldn't afford to pay him.

Oh and Lee Marvin is terrific in it.

Woody Strode also has a very good turn, as Pompey. He appears in this excellent episode of Rawhide, which I believe was filmed a little before The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

I agree with all that. Wayne is perhaps more fluid because they don't say his character is young, but at one point Stewart is supposed to be a fresh-out-of-law-school young man and he sure ain't. Good drama, though.

Like killer turtles with Kraken complexes. 3, it was like 7am when I started watching the movie after a night of no sleep so I was still wide awake. Overall, the movie was okay, just not superb or anything special even. The ending was predictable and boring. But hey, it passed the time.

Netflixed (before I break again next month) this documentary about Leonard Nimoy from his son. Good stuff.

Agreed. There wasn't enough pay off on the monsters for all that buildup, but the story was alright.

The history of Star Trek is very interesting. Nimoy and Gary Lockwood, who starred in Gene Roddenberry's series The Lieutenant, had some unflattering things to say about Gene Roddenberry, although they recognized his talent. Nimoy said Roddenberry had a cruel sense of humor that Nimoy didn't like. Lockwood said "He would lie to you," and that Roddenberry thought he was smarter than everyone else because he was the producer.

Roddenberry was an excellent writer. He wrote more episodes of Have Gun Will Travel than anyone else. The series is posted online,and it's well worth checking out. The Lieutenant was even better.

If you don't know, Roddenberry wanted Lloyd Bridges to play Kirk but couldn't get him. Bridges would have been much better than Shatner, but alas, it wasn't to be. Roddenberry thought Shatner might be too young for the role but went with him anyway. That might explain why he didn't offer it to Lockwood, who was six years younger than Shatner.

Megan Fox leads a mercenary group in Africa who are rescuing a local politician's kidnapped teen daughter when they take refuge in a poachers' camp where a vengeful lion still roams. Warning: depicts poacher activities though the violence is CGI and it is definitely anti-poacher.

If I heard that I didn't remember. Interesting. In the documentary they talk about how Hunter was actually a good actor, but too internal and staid for the dynamic they wanted where Kirk is between the pure logic of Spock and the emotion of Bones. In retrospect, it's hard to imagine anyone else in any of the roles. Now, it's history and we got what we got.

Nimoy said that Spock and Pike were introverts and that Kirk was an extrovert. He said Spock worked better with an extrovert. Maybe if the booming-voiced Malachi Throne had accepted the role of McCoy, Spock would have had a better extrovert to work with.

Hunter was an outstanding actor, and I wish he had wanted the role of Kirk in the second pilot. But his wife talked him out of taking it. Gary Lockwood was the villain of the week in that episode, so Roddenberry clearly hadn't forgotten about him

And you know what? Although Lockwood was only 29 at the time, I think he'd have done fine as Kirk. You can see that in his performance in this two-part episode of Gunsmoke, which was filmed when he was 28.
