  • The Devil's Backbone (2001)

"Stay by my side as I fade so you can point to the end of my struggle and the twilight of eternal days at the low, dark edge of life."

20th anniversary. I still think this might be del Toro's masterpiece or at least that he's never done better (and, yeah, I'd include The Shape of Water in that comparison).

I do agree, however, that the story still needs a connection. Not sure we’ll ever get it, but it’s not complete. IIRC, Ridley wanted a trilogy of P films to set up the Nostromos receiving the call and A:C was a concession to him not getting that.

I don't recall a conversation like that in Covenant; I'm pretty sure it was a one way trip from the planet in Prometheus to the planet in Covenant. But what I do recall from the very end of Prometheus was Shaw telling David she wanted to find out why her creators wanted to destroy the human race, thus the one way trip.

Also, it is my understanding that Scott very recently posted on his Twitter that he got the Green light to do the next Alien film.

I was wrong; it was in some kind of interview about another show he was working on where he dropped the subtle hint.

        • The Fear (1995)

"Are you a good person or a bad person?"

Weak 90s horror flick about grad students doing a "controlled experiment" in a cabin owned by one of their families. The experiments seem to be nothing more than people saying their fears in a loose-led group. The monster is pretty cool looking though--a wooden mannequin that is supposed to be a stand-in to confess to, but turns out more sinister. Heard about this from a video on a Youtube channel that posts old Joe Bob Briggs segments.

            "They can bill me!"

Can't really say any more than what I've already said the first 30 times I've watched this movie. Its one of the best movies ever made. Fite me.

This time around, though, I did a little more research on something that I've always noticed but never really addressed- the musical score. I read up on the struggles James Cameron and Horner had with each other recently, which would explain why I hear the Klingon motif scattered here. Also, I could swear I hear bits of TWOK as well as TSFS, but maybe I'm misplacing movie soundtracks.

No fight. It's a great movie. But I feel like I'm in a minority these days because both with The Terminator and Alien (which each have great sequels) I prefer the first movie just a bit and feel like the first one is the closer to horror.

Thats a reasonable and logical way of looking at the original films and their successors. The distinction between sci-fi and horror can be blurred at times, which leaves room for personal judgment to categorize certain films. Which leads to tonight's viewing of...

"This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off."

I'm watching these films out of order, just based on what I'm feeling each night. Tonight felt like the original Alien night. Not sure if I will bother with 3 or 4, not that I have anything against them.

Not bad, but not great. It's annoying how obviously Bergman's character is manipulated.

Makes sense. Not like you'll spoil the story for yourself.

                        • Singin' in the Rain (1952)

                          "I gotta get outta here!"

As Hollywood makes the transition from silence and Vaudeville to talkies, one famous actor is having trouble with his main partner, a woman whose voice is like nails on a chalkboard.

I really have to say this film had a flair and style that is purely magical. The coordination/choreography, the set and costume designs, really the work of brilliant intellects. Gene Kelly is of course very talented, but I seriously have to put forth that Donald O'Connor absolutely steals the show as a physical comedian (his "Make 'em Laugh" number is a sight to behold). The villain, Jean Hagen, is a hilariously mean Barbie Doll stand-in who indeed has a harpy's voice.

I really have to recommend this. It's a damn good glimpse into the olden days of Hollywood.

Also watched the opening scene from Mortal Kombat. Sub-Zero is a total asshole.

I love that one and need to get the blu ray one of these days. One of the musicals that turned me around to stop just saying I don't like musicals.

Watched this today. Typical 1990 movie, definitely a product of it's time. Felt a Lovecraftian undercurrent throughout the whole movie. Was interesting for a look, and horror fans would appreciate it, but I was kind of disappointed- I thought it was going to take place in a large graveyard by the title.

Yeah. I mean there is a graveyard in it, but it's really about employees of a cotton mill dealing with rats and then something else. I’d say the Lovecraftian bit would be the setting of the final lair.
