I recently bought a Silent Bob action figure and so I felt like watching Mallrats.

It's a silly film that not many people outside nerd culture have seen. I've appreciate the film on a nerdy level, and now on a nostalgic level. When I was young, I spent alot of time at my local mall, but nowadays, I avoid going to the mall as much as possible. Anyway, Mallrats is definitely reflective of time with the clothing and how many young people at the time spent their time.

It's not my favorite Kevin Smith movie because I didn't really like the lead characters, as their whiny and self involved; specifically Brodie, who rants and raves about 80% of the time. It's the ancillary characters that actually carry the film, particular Jay and Silent Bob. Moreover, Stan Lee's appearance was more than a cameo; it's a featured role.

I watched the bonus material, and this was a studio pushed film, as they wanted a "smart Porky's" film. Kevin Smith noted that the studio felt there weren't any naked boobie films in the market anymore and they felt they should fill that void with Mallrats. I don't think Mallrats filled that void.

Overall, Mallrats isn't a good film as the main characters are really likable and there's not much heart in this film. Although, I can appreciate it on other levels.

I still love that movie. I think it's the most fun of the Red Bank movies, though not necessarily the most clever and not slickest production.
But I'd say I'm a fan of the View Askewniverse. I even made a special trip with a few buddies to Red Bank to shop at Secret Stash and pose in fron of the Clerks stores (of course, for me, that was less than 2 hours away).

        • If I'm anywhere near Redbank, I plan to visit the Secret Stash. It was weird seeing Bryan Johnson so young and thin and funny to see Walt with a mullet. I was reading an article today noting that because of the filming for "Comic Book Men" that some visitors couldn't enter the store. I'm a big fan of Kevin Smith's earlier films, particularly "Chasing Amy," which is around or near my Top 10 all time favorite film.

I've seen the "Founder" and it's a ruthless film. The McDonald's brothers were screwed over as badly or worse that Joe Shuster and Jerry Seigel. I remember working at McDonald's and during the orientation we were required to watch the history of McDonald's and Ray Kroc as the Founder. It's a very different story.

I watched that show too. In retrospect, I think Mike rang me up and gave me the directions to the Quick Stop (it's like 15 minutes from Secret Stash). I wish I had the picture of my friend and I leaning against the window, but my friend took it and I never got a copy before basically losing track of him.

He was definitely ruthless and screwed them, but I kind of feel like Shuster and Siegel were worse off. At least the McDonalds brothers weren't left in poverty. They made a lot of money in the 50s and got a big pay off for the day. I'm sure their fair share would be a bigger number than what Shuster should have gotten, but as far as I know, they didn't have to work as grocery baggers. They remind me of that other guy who helped make Facebook---they got the short end of the stick, but they were still better off financially than they were before the crumby deal.

I thought The Founder actually did a good job at showing Croc's side too. Early on, you kind of root for his big gamble to pay off. And you could argue that he's the one who did all the work to franchise it and put everything on the line. Had he never met them, the McDonalds would've stayed at the one location (probably closed the others). BUT none of that excuses that he was underhanded and dishonorable. He could've treated the brothers fairly and still been a very rich man with a very successful industry. Actually, I think the part that pisses me off most is not allowing them to use the name; as if the one burger stand would somehow hurt the corporation. Business is business, but I personally think you can be a good businessman and a decent man too.

                    • I watched Q expecting it to be funny but it really wasn't. A better writer could have taken this premise and made a hilarious movie from it. I see it as a wasted golden opportunity.

Believe it or not, despite not changing my estimation that it's fun, I agree. You'd probably agree with this Dark Corners' review that it has a lot of potential (especially from the angle of the sacrifice resurrecting an Aztec god) but wastes it by focusing on the wrong subplots.

That said, Cohen threw this together when another movie fell through and it made him money. Gotta cut him some slack. I thought it was still pretty funny and enjoyable in a cheesy B way. I like that Moriarity's character isn't really likable or noble. And the stop-motion creature is pretty decent (though wisely not over shown).
