honestly if you have the time watch the whole thing because its just amazing how insane this cunt is. she took it a step further linking homosexuality to 911 and also bashes the military because we went to war for homosexuals. its so sad its also sickly funny

    • But back on the topic of Star Trek...

I thought Pike was an interesting character on the show, for the single episode he had. I think I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the show as much, though, had he been Captain permanently. He just seemed too serious for some of the fun that Star Trek was known for. The tone of the show would have been different, and I think I would have missed some of what would have been lost.

In other words, they are simply nuts.
Well, I would guess they'd feel they were fulfilling John 15:18 ("If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you"). Of course, the problem is that they would be playing the verse against many others and seem to have no concept of grace.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. I'd probably still like it (I like "The Cage"), but not as much. Who know what would've happened to Trek in that event, but supposedly Hunter wasn't very popular with the execs (neither was Majel Barret).

        • Star Trek Generations (1994)

Dr. Soran: "They say time is the fire in which we burn."

After a maddening journey through my attic in search for my toy Klingon Bird of Prey (which Mr. Ed can attest to), I was going through all my Trek stuff, box by box, and a lot of good memories came flooding back to me. One was the transition film Generations, which I saw opening night in 1994, which was a confusing year with some good highlights, this movie being one of them.

1994 was the year I graduated high school and started college, but most importantly, the year I threw myself into Star Trek, watching TNG and TOS in syndication constantly. I can't tell you how many late nights I stayed up watching TOS on Channel 56, becoming enamored with Mr. Spock, Kirk, Bones, and the whole crew. It was a very special time for me, as my world view expanded exponentially when I entered college, no longer safe in small town, USA.

Out of all the Trek movies, this one was the most emotional for me (besides TWOK) because, like Soran, I wished I could get back in time to a simpler and happier period of my life. In a lot of ways, this film was a sort of "coming of age" movie for me, because I, like the crew of the Enterprise, was making a huge transition. The scenes inside the Nexus were simply beyond beautiful, giving me the sense of Christmas's from my own childhood, and Guinan, bless her, is like the elder voice telling me "It's time to let go."

Of course, this is the passing of the torch from Kirk to Picard, and in many ways, I think it was Shatner's final goodbye to Trek (although he kept busy with Trek-related stuff throughout the years) on film. Malcom McDowell certainly served up a spicy villain, although fairly one-dimensional, and the Duras sisters (as always) were a hoot, but I will never forget that line that Soran said to Picard in Ten-Forward about "time being the fire in which we burn." Whenever someone talks about time in front of me, or how "the years go by so quickly" or some such thing, I always think of that line from Generations and how true it really is.

The soundtrack by Dennis McCarthy was a regular in my car for a good year; the main theme added a little something extra that really seemed to play on my emotions whenever I gave it a listen, especially the Nexus music.

My least favorite aspect of the film was the whole "Data's emotion chip" thing. It felt like forced comedy against a rather serious film. On the other hand, the saucer-section crash was worth the price of admission alone.

I always thought it was necessary as they introduced the emotion chip halfway through Next Generation and it was a necessary evolution for Data.
When they stopped using it in Insurrection it was a huge step back for me and not using it in Nemesis at all annoyed me.

Yeah, I think Data should have gotten the chip back during the show or they should've just established that he slowly developed them as part of his programming. Being completely emotionless was too much of a copy of Vulcans.

Plus Data tended to smirk a lot and some of the things he did made no sense if he had no emotional motivation (heck, even the desire to be more human does not seem logical and detached).

              • Former Star Trek movie producer Harve Bennett just passed away:

                • I always thought it was very unlikely that Data, newly discovering emotion, and having been, so far as we know, surrounded day by day with people who did not really curse, would decide to yell "Shit!" when the ship was crashing. Cursing is something of a habit. It isn't an automatic reaction under sufficient stress. I don't curse in general, so in stressful or painful situations that is not something I fall back on. Worst I'm likely to say is "Dagnabit!"

(Really, that is actually something I will say when I'm pissed at something or suddenly in pain. Go ahead and laugh at me, I don't mind. )

Data wasn't in the habit of cursing, and he wasn't surrounded by those that do, so I found it unbelievable that he would suddenly decide to do so at that point. It reminded me of the situation in Tranformers The Movie where they tossed in a "Shit!" just to make it more edgy and get a PG rating. It just seemed out of place.

                  • with talk of a new series floating around does any old school trekkies think it can work? i mean back in the day it broke many barriers and would you rather have all new species or prefer what was established in the 60s?

                    • The stock answer is, "I'd love a new Trek series if it was good. If it sucks, forget it."

The reality is that the reason behind that answer is, if they film it, I will watch it, so I'd rather not get "stuck" watching something that sucks. I'm not even sure how bad a Trek show would have to be for me to give up on watching it.

I guess if they made it ultraviolent and gory, with tons of nudity, explicit sex, and cursing, I'd be skipping it. But at that point, it would have to be on cable, anyway, so watching wouldn't be an option even if I wanted to.

i was coming from a point of view where today in society everything is socially exceptable unlike the 60s . i consider myself still a new trekkie but what other barriers todays can such a show break on tv that hasnt been already done?

                        • I tried watching TNG a few times and just couldn't get into it. None of the characters interested me, especially the android. I mean, you can use a "character" like that for laughs but nothing else.

This. I stopped watching DS9 for a while when it aired (which I've since made up for), but it was the first and last time I quit on Trek. Actually, I don't think there has been a bad Trek show yet. The two that get most ragged on (Voyager and Enterprise) I enjoyed quite a bit.

On another level, however, I'm okay with only Trek films for now. I watch exactly two shows that still air (The Simpsons and Doctor Who) and that is because I'm a geek-level fan of both and addicted. If they went off the air tomorrow, I'd watch no shows and be okay with that.

But I would feel compelled to watch a Trek show (probably also a Firefly, Farscape, or Babylon 5), which means I'd have to add that to my schedule too (and I really would since I have family and friends who are Trekkies) and I find that a burdensome draw on my movie-watching and book-reading time.
