  • Shape/model of Power Rings

how many types of power rings are there, i have seen thru the different artists of the books it can be subjective. Can each lantern make the look of his/her ring customizable?

    Hal has the round style

Kyle has the box looking style

guy has a different style ring

as a collector of GL rings its hard to keep up with what the artists put out there.

i seems that each can customize their ring much like their battery.

I posted about this a few months back:

Hal when he appeared had a circle ring. as did every other GL.

When Mike Grell in GL v2 #90

...Hal got the circle-less ring. it was supposed to be an "upgrade" and all GLS were shown changing rings. The ONE thing I remember about that ring...it could change shape. 1970s Hal used to disguise his ring as...get this... SUNGLASSES!

If I was Hal...I would have chose something more practical....like...I dunno...ANOTHER RING!!!!
(and yes, there was a tale where Hal lost his sunglasses).
Here is a Grell cover with the ring visable...notice it looks like Kyle's:

Now look at this much later cover...done by Gil Kane no less... Hal's ring looks like KYLE's current ring:

Hal wore the circle-less ring for years. When he quit in the 1980s, JOHN got his same circle-less ring that Hal used to wear (that second ring of Hal's after Grell took over). Even GUY got a similar looking ring.

In GL 198 Tomar Re died...he willed his ring to...JOHN.
And instructed him to give Hal back his ring.

Hal and all the earth bound 1980s GLS (Guy, John, Ch'p, Salak, etc.) had this style. They kill Sinestro..power rings go blooey (except for Guy, Hal, Ch'p and a few others).

Then...Action Comics Weekly. Hal encounters LORD MAVOLIO who is some banished old school GL that can manipulate teh Green without the ring. he DESTROYS Hal's ring...Hal has to TAKE Mavolios ring. Mavolio had the old school Gil Kane ROUNG ring.

After that story, from the late 80s to the 1990s Hal ALWAYS had a round ring.
And...thats the ring Hal wore in Emerald Twilight. Notice his ring finger here:

Notice Hal's was the only "round" ring? Remember in the 1990s, the Guardians had restarted the Corps...Guy had the ring seen above, the Old Timer gave John a ring, and the Guardians seemed to dish out the the round-less ring to the new 1990s GLs like Bodika and Tomar-Tu.

Although the first appearance of Jack Chance he had the round ring on the cover:

This use of a round ring right up to the very end of ET...
fueled speculation that maybe Lord Mavolio was behind Hal going nuts (even Chris Priest aka James Owsley chimed in on that. http://glcorps.dcuguide.com/priestpst.php

Intersting enough...the Guardian called the "Old Timer" "dug a ring out of the battery" and Hal gave it to JOHN. John...uses the circle less ring.

Ganthet takes Hal's shattered Mavolio ring...and remakes it to the circle less version. Gives it to KYLE.

A Hal Jordan from the past did meet Kyle and duped his round ring.
(this is fan wallpaper made from art in that story...I miss Daryl Bank's GL art!)

This was in contradicition to silver age stories...particularly the first appearance of Hector Hammond where Hal made a dupe ring for Tom and stated it would disappear after 24 hours. This was the ring Kyle gave to Jade...

went out to space to rebuild the Corps...and eventually gave to JOHN after Jade got her powers back.

in 2004, the Green Arrow story Archer's quest, it was revealed OLLIE had an old Hal ring that was round.

This was...kind of stupid. As Ollie might have used that at various times in his career...or against Parallax. This was the ring OLLIE used against Sinestro in Rebirth... and was a ROUND ring and the ring Hal took in REBIRTH.

When Rebirth happen...the rings start to dupe itself. GUY gets a dupe...but he REMAKES his to the circle less style in Rebirth.

You actually SEE the ring reshape itself in the comic. Again...a contradiction as the round rings supposedly could not change shape...

          Hope that helps.

            Also...

There was a scene in that crappy series "The Kingdom" that SUperman used all power rings he could find (in Planet Krypton). And DC made a replica of this. So you can see ALL rings here:

You have silver age Power Ring's power ring from the Earth 3 Crime Sydicate, Synestro's, Hal's ring in the original Gil Kane round style, Alan Scott's ring (which looks like his battery) And the round-les style drawn by Mike Grell on up (that Kyle, John, and Guy usually wear).

thanks for the history lesson, it never says that can or cannot change the ring style I guess they just get what the artist gives them.

Its been running in the back of my mind about rings for a week or so. The rings will hvae to be able to change size to accomidate each user. For example, i find it hardly unlikely that Abin Sur and Hal Jordan have the same size ring finger. so the rings must be able to change size

I bet thats true, some GLs don't have fingers, so it would have to adapt.

that ring that they show now isnt the first one with out the signet style there was 1. the plain band with the symbol.....2.the plain band with the symbol and a round gem in the center like the 1990 hal figure had.....3.the newest one the symbol on the 3 banded ring......4. then of course there was the chunk ring? if thats what its called if you look at issue 49 vol 3 cover you will see three different types of rings
