Like some of you, the O'Neil version from the Tales of the GLC backup strip in the 80s was the one I discovered him in. I got into GL at this time, and O'Neil's version has always been my favorite. In fact, I don't care for the way he's drawn lately at all.

The way he is now I think is really good. His expression is done so it can convey the text well without any changes. Similar to what they did with C3PO in Star Wars. The expression does not change, but the emotion comes through. Maybe Anthony Daniels could do a cameo as Stel in the GL movie.

ARISE, NECRO-THREAD, ARISE!
I've ignored this thread for far too long. Both in the comics, and in other media, Stel has been redesigned a couple times!
These days, in the comics, he looks like this (figure by Mattel):
DC Direct/DC Collectibles did their own, noticeably different take on a modern Stel:
Then there was the live-action movie in 2011. Apparently, in early concept art, Stel looked like this:
The designers then toyed around with a few other ideas...
...before finally settling on the final design used in the film:
I'm still mad that Mattel never made a figure of the ACTUAL movie Stel seen on the big screen. That design would've made for an awesome Movie Masters figure.
I think, all told, my favorite these days is the modern version that Mattel made as a Collect & Connect Figure. It reminds me of the old Kevin O'Neill design from the '80s, while being updated enough to suit modern sensibilities and to do away with some of the held-over 1960s styling ideas that were still there in O'Neill's design.

Great old thread!
I still stick with my love for the O'Neil version.
The movie Stel was pretty cool though. Maybe my second favorite of the many designs.

The thing about Kevin O'Neill is, his artwork is INSANE! When he gets into the story "Tyger, Tyger" (written by Alan Moore and drawn by O'Neill) the artwork looks like the worst parts of the Bible on CRACK! That's the one where Abin Sur travels to that demonic world where the Guardians imprisoned the 5 Inversions, and was given the prophecy of his death, and the prophecies regarding Sodam Yat and the Blackest Night!
And then there was his art on his Stel story, "I, Lantern". The alien race Stel's people fought also look very demonic and alien. I think one of the reasons Stel, his people, and their alien foes (if they ever showed up again after that story) would have been redesigned after O'Neill left the book is that few artists could match his style. It's unique and, frankly, scary-looking stuff.
Here's a couple more character designs from him, for Stel's temporary replacements in the story "I, Lantern"...
Unnamed GL of Sector 3009
Yron of Grenda (from the same mechanical race as Stel)
There goes O'Neill again with the Robot Nipples! Dude's as bad as Director Joel Schumacher, with his Batnipples on the Batsuits!
And here's a sample page from the story "Tyger, Tyger", including the original character design for Sodam Yat...
Dude's artwork was insanely detailed and disturbing. If you've seen the animated film Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, it adapts "Tyger, Tyger" VERY loosely. A LOT of aspects of the story are changed, and NO attempt is made by the animators to make the planet Ysmault and its inhabitants look ANYTHING like Kevin O'Neill's art. I'm sure Alan Moore considers the animated version absolute rubbish.
And just for fun, here's a fun little Stel comic strip, made using Mattel's Collect & Connect figure!

Stel in DCU Online...
So, the real reason I bumped this thread up was research. I've decided to recreate Stel as a playable character in DC Universe Online!
Here's Stel, fresh from Character Creation. As has always been the case with DCUO, the character appearance options available at Character Creation are very limited. But here's what I have so far:
Here's the "recipe" of what I went with...
Skin: Robotic
Chest: Contemporary Tech
Legs: Contemporary Tech
Head: Visor
Hands: Power Reinforced
Feet: Power Reinforced
Emblem: Moon
Accessory: Green Aura
Weapon: Rifle (Green Energy Cannon)
Color Palette Hex Codes
Green: 004600
Black: 000000
Silver: C0C0C0
I may adjust the silver a little, not sure yet. My ultimate goal is to make him look as close to the version in the modern comics as possible (see the Mattel Collect & Connect figure in a previous post.) He REALLY needs some armor pieces, especially chest armor, to make him look even more robotic, but it's a start.
