  • Does anyone like Sinestro's original conception better?

Reading Tazer's reply in the thread about Sinestro: Year One, got me to thinking. Is there anyone who honestly likes Sinestro in his original incarnation or something closer to it at least? If so how close, and what changes if any would you make to his original presentation?

I'd prefer him evil but with a bit more depth.

I think he should have started out a hero and then turned evil.

I like him best of all as a kind of twisted anti-hero.

No, honestly I did not like Sinestro at all until recently. He was another mustache twirling villain who came up with really stupid scemes and never realised he had a power ring that could easily kill any GL if he actually tried. He always wasted his time with mind-reverberrating rays and other crap like that instead of taking out Lanterns and stealing their rings one by one.

He even had the luxury of being one of the "useful" members of the Legion of Doom and he still never accomplished anything. He was almost always in the background while Toyman or Riddler messed with the superfriends.

Tough question...for me I'd say I like Sinestro as he's being portrayed now because when I was younger I only knew him from the classic Super Friends show as just another villain who plots to defeat the hero. But with this whole, unhinging the Corps by forcing them to allow Lethal Force, it has added a whole new dimension which I love.

I like the new incarnation the best of course. But Sin was good for his time in the silver age with the cheesiness. The thing about the new one is that he is just so corrupt and evil, but also seemingly acting like he is the good guy. Its just really cool how GJ pulls it off.

Geoff took a "misguided hero fallen from grace" called Hal Jordan and retconned him into the nicest guy in the universe. It's only fitting that he'd retcon the most sinister motherf***er in the universe into a "misguided hero fallen from grace".

Are we reading a different version of GL volume 4?, how is Hal the nicest guy anywhere and Sinestro is more evil now than he's ever been.

Personaly I think Sinestro is in his own twisted way still trying to be the Hero he always thought he was. In much the same way Stalin and Hitler thought they were doing the right things the right way. All 3 see fear as a acceptiable means of control. And in a sad way their right, create enought fear and you get control and order. It's not right it's completly evil, but it's only evil to us looking in from the outside. Those actually doing the evil it's never precieved as evil. It's one of the sick things about morality, a person with a twisted since of morality a slanted view of right and wrong nevers see's the evil. They only see what they think is wrong and their way of fixing it.

I love the current Sinestro, which I take to be "twisted anti-hero".

It's like Lyrissa says, right? How the worst intentions are actually for the best. It's thats ort of warped logic that makes truly evil acts possible.

The origional Sinestro never struck a chord with me. He was good, in the same way many opposite-villains are good and I liked him for many of the same reasons I like most opposite villains. Now, I think he shines as a character in his own right.

                      Yo.

TBCH I dont mind, and even like, the new spin on Sinestros motivations but my problems come from the COMPLETE & TOTAL reworking of Hal & Sin's relationship cuz its not really necessary.

Necessary? Strange word. But I get ya - and if it's not to your liking, fair enough.

But wow-- I think most of the best beats of Geoff's current work is centered around his new take on Sinestro. And his rapport with Hal is a lot more engaging now than it ever was, for my money - there's depth, layers of regret, lost comraderie, etc.

But more than anything, this Sinestro strikes me as a modernized progression of what he was way back when.
