  • Green Lantern 75th Anniversary (May 21, 2015)

Superman, Batman, and Flash have had their turn, but Green Lantern is coming up!

May 21 marks the 75th anniversary of All-American Comics #16 (cover date of July with issues on the stands on May 21) and the premier and origin of Alan Scott, the first Green Lantern.

Personally, I'm sure I'll be doing a few things (probably re-read Alan and Hal's origins and watch some of the three movies), but if anyone should be celebrating, it should be this Message Board!

So, what do we want to do? I can probably make up appropriate entries in the book and movie Clubs, but what else? Contests? Trivia? Reading Challenges? Retrospectives? Special art/banner? We have a month to prepare. Let's celebrate the coolest concept in super hero history!

Well, so far the support from the GLCMb community for the anniversary celebrations have been overwhelming.

Nonetheless, I'll probably try the Reading Challenge starting tomorrow. I figured two books a week for the next 4 weeks (which is through the actual anniversary). I thought I'd model it after the 2015 Reading Challenging with themes. For example, the final week could be to read and/or discuss an origins story for both Alan and Hal. Other ideas were an issue where Hal hits his head, one with the first appearance of a non-earth GL, etc.

Wish I had the time to devote to a serious commemoration. I'd probably try to get the kids to rewatch the GL Animated series with me, except evidence (DVDs out by the TV) suggests they just did that.

The thing is, DC has thrown away almost everything about Alan Scott. There's really nothing left to celebrate.

Today is the day. I'll be updating the Reader's challenge and probably post under General too. Happy Green Lantern Day!

75 years ago today. Not to many fans left from day one. Wow, three quarters of a century that the GL concept has been kicking around and getting mileage for DC. Pretty impressive.
