  • Crappy storylines that are frequently revisited

Two of my least favorite storylines are being repeated for the umpteenth time.
Which is the inspiration for this thread.

Bad but constantly revisited idea #1 Hal giving up the ring. Every once in a while Captain America gives up the shield, Tony Stark the armor or Thor the hammer but Hal giving up the ring has been done so many times it is ridiculous. The funny thing I can't recall any great storylines resulting from Hal giving up the ring. Well the loss of the ring around the original Crisis was great for but did nothing for the character of Hal Jordan. Yet it is always done. Cap giving up the shield gave us the Winter Soldier or Super Patriot. Thor and the Hammer gave us Beta Ray Bill and the Surtur Saga, ect but Hal giving up the ring gave us what?...

Bad but constantly rehashed idea #2 Where John is concerned bringing up Xanshi. Cosmic Odyssey wasn't a quintessential John story. There are much better John stories in Mosaic but people that don't know anything about John always default to Xanshi. Like no other heroes have ever failed before but Xanshi is an albatross around John worse than Jason Todd being brained by the Joker was to Bruce. Yet here we go again...Xanshi. Why not revisit John's time as a pseudo Guardian in the Vertigoesque Mosaic? But no we keep going back to Xanshi

Bad but constantly rehashed idea #3 for Kyle it is the seemingly forced pairing of Kyle with established characters romantically. Donna, Jade, Carol, Natu none of those pairing actually felt organic or like they belonged to Kyle. The only one that ever has was Alex. Actually Kyle has two because the second of his is, Kyle fans which I could never be confused for, say part of his charm is his relatability in earthbound stories yet Kyle is constantly being kept off earth and given Godlike powers making him less and less relatable.

I can't think of any bad retreaded ideas for Guy except how JLI took a crap on him making him more of a joke than a fleshed out character but otherwise, I can't think of anything maybe one of you guys can.

As for Alan (my 2nd favorite GL) the only bad idea in any variation of the character is the current Earth 2 one. I loved Roy Thomas All Star Squadron version father of Jade and Obsidian, loved Geoff's JSA version even more alpha dog of the JSA and even the classic tales but this new Alan isn't my Alan, I don't connect to him like I did all the others.

Well, as a HUGE fan of Mosaic, I do feel compelled to point out that John's feelings of guilt over Xanshi were a big motivating factor going in to THAT, so it CAN be used well. But yeah, it does get tiresome when it is constantly brought up, and in service of...stories not as good as Mosaic was, IMHO.

Two things that need to go in any reimagining are John destroying planets and Batman beating up Guy. And later for all prophecies.

My if I was editor this would get you fired on the spot is.

        1. No more rebulding the Corps stories.

        2. No mre Power rings falling back to Oa images. Though ment to be dramatic, every time I see it now I laugh my ass off.

3.no more power up or costume changes for Kyle. let's pick a look and stick with it.

Nothing else about Abin Sur. I'm as tired of him as I am of seeing the Waynes murdered and little Kal-El rocketing to Earth.

Don't threaten the audience with the thought of Hal's father's coming back from the dead anymore. Don't do it for real and don't even foreshadow it anymore.

Yes, no more rebuilding the Corps stories. Of course that would require them not to destroy it in the first place, which looks exactly like what's happening now.

I was never a fan of Carol Ferris having super-powers. Learn how to develop and use an interesting supporting cast of non-super characters.

Kyle destroyed a planet too didn't he? Nobody harps on that the way they do with John.

No more stories about someone who doesn't want a power ring.

No more stories about Sinestro that gloss over his horrible crimes.

No more defining "greatness" as overcoming fear or being bullheaded.

No more gimmicks like the hoodie and the gauntlet. That has no staying power. You know it, I know it and God knows it.

No more Lanterns with teeth that look like those of deep-sea fish.

Guy's Daddy issues, anger issues and that Hal was chosen instead of him because Hal happened to be closer have been retreaded. Hell, Guy's supposed anger issues are the reason Guy's currently a Red Lantern. I'm tired of Guy being treated as the ill tempered asshole of the group because the heads running DC have their heads stuck in the past. Guy got over his issues years ago during the GG:W run by Beau Smith.

For a creative group in DC that proudly labels themselves "Progressive" there hasn't been anything progressive about the characters in years.

Abuse by fathers does happen, but it was taking the easy way out with Guy. Why did he have to be EXPLAINED? It was like, "We didn't plan for this character to become popular, so out of political correctness we're going to apologize for it."

The Red Lanterns gig was asinine, but when I said so on the message boards, the fan boys sang, "Nooooooo, it's puuuuuuurfect for hiiiiiiiiimmmmm!!!!!"

Frankly, Guy going the the Red Lanterns DID make a kind of sense. But having him stay there long term is kind of limiting, IMHO.

Ugh. To me any time a GL trades their ring in for ANY other color ring, it's just cheesy.

I prefer it to seeing Superman or Batman wearing one. Plus I think it is a more comfortable change then,oh he always had this Alien blood,so yeah... there is that.

No more Hal and Carol reltaionship difaculties. I don't care anymore.

I'll have to disagree with you there, on at least one instance. I thought it was awesome when Guy had Sinestro's ring (back before this had any meaning with respect to emotional states).
