But seriously, yeah, I'm a bit tired of the constant, large-scale conflict that has been the norm for the title for a while. I think the title actually needs a status quo (constant status quo changes do not count as a status quo), so that we can have a somewhat stable backdrop against which we can tell some smaller scale stories.

The constant upheaval in the fundamentals of the mythos is old. Way, way old. And hey, you never know -- it might be an option that you could get me to do it.
Remember when a GL ring was the most powerful weapon in the universe...and now it's a trinket that anyone can use?
I remember when anyone could use it, but only a skilled user made it the most powerful weapon in the universe. That was my preferred state, personally. I'd dislike everybody being able to use it effectively (though I'm not sure when that has happened), but I also disliked Geoff Johns' retcon that every time you use it is like passing a kidney stone or something, and that most people couldn't even make it glow. Sure, it makes GLs look badass, I guess (though it seems like kind of a cheap way to do it, rather than just SHOWING them being badass through the ways they use the ring), but it makes the kind of fun, joking stuff that GLs would often do with their constructs either impossible, or else just kind of jarringly unlikely given what we are TOLD the experience of using the ring is like.

And that only happened ONCE on that single page. It was never mentioned or shown again (even in the same series!), and no else ever had a problem with the ring.

Well, actually, I thought it was brought up when Batman tried the ring on, too...
But yes, it rapidly became pretty much irrelevant. Which, for me made it MORE annoying, at least for a while. I mean, he basically retconned that in, thereby making several older stories pretty much impossible, then didn't even USE the retcon, ignoring it from then on. Eventually I just pretended it never happened, and that the rings worked the way they always had before. Anybody can pick up a ring and use it, but their constructs can't stand up to any real resistance unless they have the will to back them up, and a REAL GL could take over control of the ring from them remotely if they exerted their superior will sufficiently.
And Batman? And Green Arrow? Actually, even though Kyle was supposedly the one that told Ollie that (I think? It's been a while since I read it) the only time Kyle actually SHOWED any sign of difficulty or pain in using the ring was when Parallax was trying to reach him through it, and the OTHER Green Lanterns just fell under Parallax's influence, so Kyle looked good by comparison there. So no, I don't think it was to crap on Kyle...quite the opposite, actually.
Come to think of it, Geoff did the same sort of things that Vince McMahon did. He cheapened all the stuff that used to be special. In wrestling, guys used to hold belts for years. Now they hold them for a day. Heel turns and face turns used to be special. Now they happen every week. Throwing a guy over the top rope was an automatic disqualification. Now it happens in every match. PPVs used to be special. Now they're often worse than the free episode of Raw the next night.
Ring bearers used to be special in some way or another, though weird or goofy at times. Now you've got, ranting, grunting, drooling Lanterns with their own corps and ongoings.
That stuff gets people excited for a while, especially the casual fans, but then it wears off and what do you do? It's like strip mining or grinding the seed corn. In the long run it burns itself out.
See, I can understand complaints that the rings have been "cheapened" by the fact that there are so many different kinds now, operated by so many different characters, but I haven't actually noticed any rash of random people picking up GL rings and using them effectively. Nor of rings power levels being nerfed. When the rings fail to bring down enemies easily, it is more a case of enemy inflation than ring "cheapening" as far as I can tell, and that is nothing new. The rings are still plenty amazing, I think, it is just that, as it has been THROUGHOUT the entire history of GL comics, enemies often have the ability to stand up to the ring...otherwise stories would be rather short and boring, would they not?
So I can sympathise with those feeling like the existence of the Rainbow Corps make the GL ring seem less "special", but I'm not seeing any unusual degree of powering down the ring, or legions of non-GLs picking them up and using them like a pro. Some extent of those things have been present from time to time throughout the history of the comic, and I'm sure there are some examples now, too, but I don't see THAT aspect being any more troublesome than before, by and large.
