  • Lights Out: "Epic" Story or "Epic" Failure

ok lets give it the run down

    1) the Blues are gone (but that happened before Lights Out so......)

    2) all but one of the Entities are "dead" ( yeah i'm sure that's forever)

    3) OA's gone (for now)

    4) Hal sucks as the leader (unsure why)

    5) Hal and Carol are done for ( yeah right)

    6) the Reds now control space sector 2814 (that's something i guess)

    7) Kyle, for 3 issues, become the "Ultimate"-Lantern (for me, being a Kyle fan and all, that's something)

    8) it was only 5 issues long (not really epic in my book)

    9) the Greens are weaker then ever before

so with all that "epic" story or "epic" failure, you decide

I'm unwilling to vote for either of the "Epic" options. I wasn't particularly happy with it, especially the fact that we are now stuck with the "environmental issues" angle, but I didn't think it qualified as an "Epic" failure. I certainly didn't think it qualfied as an "Epic" story.

It got rid of some stupid shit, so I wouldn't call it an epic failure.

My only real concern is the energy situation, which I think will be addressed and solved so that the energy is unlimited. It could have something to do with what Kyle saw beyond the Source Wall.

While it wasn't spectacular, I think it was a good event for Kyle Rayner and John Stewart fans. There are some great moments for both characters. From what I've been able to discern, the only ones who are rather unhappy about it seem to be people reading primarily for Hal Jordan, which I can understand.

What did it get rid of REALLY? The entities? I'll be convinced of that when Parallax is gone. The Blue Lanterns? Well, as far as I can tell Saint Walker isn't dead yet. Plus I found the Blues to be one of the better additions among the other Corps.

And I find the baggage that it ADDED more than balances anything it got rid of, but that's just me. Though I would still, as I said, agree that it wasn't an epic failure. I'd call it a failure, though.

One thing that is over looked in this. The death of the White Entity. In Blackest Night, it was stated that all life was connected to it, basically when it dies so does everyone living. We saw the effects that Nekron attacking the Entity had on everyone during Blackest Night. So now that the White Entity is dead, shouldn't all of life we dead as well?

And isn't that really a victory anymore?

What, not being an epic failure?

I will say this. One thing this event did do, for me, anyway, was put to rest any notion that Geoff Johns was going to be meddling with these titles from behind the scenes.

The only thing that would even slightly suggest that would be the fact that Sinestro and Parallax were left out of it, even though it seemed a rather significant weakness that, given the "life of the universe" stakes, nobody even TRIED to get Parallax in on the entities' plan. And even THAT will only really seem likely to have been Johns' doing if it turns out that the upcoming Sinestro title is penned by him. I think that upcoming title is the real reason Parallax was left out of this.

I wonder how folks would react if it was revealed that Superman flying around was actually somehow destroying the ozone layer. Or better yet, ALL flying heroes (and villains) were contributing to Climate Change by flying somehow. From now on, Supes and pals must run everywhere, and only fly in EMERGENCIES, if there's no other option. Maybe Superman's heat vision is destroying the ozone, too. Isn't it FUN to have your Superheroes saddled with environmental concerns?
