Superhero Green Lantern inspires ODOT to propose new lights for plows

COLUMBUS, OHIO -- The Ohio Department of Transportation is taking a cue from the world of comics and hopes to use "Green Lanterns" to illuminate snow-removing equipment to avoid accidents.

"Taking a cue from the comic book superhero who uses green light to protect the people of Earth, the Ohio Department of Transportation is hoping a Green Lantern will protect its snowplows from a dangerous spike in crashes this season," said an ODOT news release.

The report said there have already been 63 crashes involving snowplows in the first month of winter, which is more than the 57 crashes that occurred during the entire 2009-2010 winter season.

Included in the department's budget request for 2012-2013 is a proposal to use green lanterns -- flashing LED lights placed on top of snow removal equipment -- to prevent accidents by lighting up the large, slow-moving plows.

Currently, the state allows ODOT to use only yellow flashing lights, commonly shared by other non-emergency vehicles such as tow trucks and mail delivery vehicles. Research indicates that green lights have a better visibility in snowy, wintery conditions.

Besides, the yellow lantern is a symbol of evil wielded by the renegade Green Lantern, Sinestro, in DC's "Green Lantern" comics.

Thats funny, because if you go back to when Martin Nodell created the Alan Scott Green Lantern, he got his inspiration while riding a subway and the trainman had a green lantern up to let everyone know everything was safe. Guess it had come full circle...at least in Ohio.

              This just in.

The National Transportation council reccomends using Lights based upon the different colors of the emotional spectrum from the Green Lantern comic books currently in print to monitor traffic intersections.

The proposed lighting system would use Red (Rage), Yellow (Fear) and Green (Willpower) in a top to bottom fashion to indicate when a vehicle may enter an intersection and when to stop.

More details to follow as they become available.

This will however lead to some pretty sorry looking members of the green lantern corps in future.

I wonder how many of us will be looking to acquire one of their green lanterns. What will they look like?
