  • Superman is the new Powergirl...

I know Superman has his own thread, but this is specifically targeted at the post Rebirth staus quo of Superman and the fact pre-New52 Superman/Superdad is similar to Powergirl. How can an alternate version of the universe's greatest hero just step in and take his place? He's one-upping Powergirl in that he's not forging his own alias [I think Luke Cage would have a problem if he became Powerman] but am I the only one that thinks this decision is a bit strange? I know New52 Superman's fate is unclear. And I'm betting Super League is a story that exists solely to insert the old Superman into the New52 Trinity. How the new Chinese Superman fits into the picture is also unclear.

I'm not sure this new status quo will make Superman anymore readable than he has been and it would seem like it's gonna confuse new readers. Especially if New52 Superman is running around as Clark Kent full time [I know it's only a rumor but it's as likely to happen as anything else].

What's everyone else's take on this? Will the older Superman w/child be a better fit in this universe than the Superman actually created for it? If the character DOES prove to be more popular than the Superman we've been reading the last few years will other pre-New52 versions show up down the road? Could this gimmick actually *fix* the problems with the current universe?

Its way too complicated. Its just not smart to have multiple versions of the same character running around. There has to be a great deal of distinction between them to justify that.

Not having every other issue be a tie-in to a crossover instantly makes the line more readable.

Well considering the writing will be better sans Lobdell and crossovers, probably.

Doubt we'll see any other outright replacements other than what we're getting with Huntress. Instead we'll probably get retcons that bring in pre-Flashpoint details into the universe. And no this won't really fix the problems because just introducing old continuity doesn't fix the quality of storytelling.

Well everything is pointing towards us only having Superdad so you won't have to worry about the complications.

i don't know what their/there/they're doing to S-man (S-men with child, "other" S-man, Lex S-man, Lois S-man/woman and god knows what else S-man) but i, for one, think it's gonna back fire on'em BIG TIME

The last Superman/Action/Wonder Woman thing..."Savage Dawn" I think was the name, was TOO much like that. It was definitely a turn off for me. I'm wondering whether the trade will combine the different titles for a more easily accessible read.

But to be completely honest, I didn't think it was a great story to begin with; in fact the only Superman story I still own from the new 52 is Unchained, which I thought was great. I do find the Adams "Supermen" title kinda fun.

^I thought "Savage Dawn" was okay but went on too long.

I was already tired of the depowered Superman thing before I read SD. And I thought the trip back was a bit much as well, having to get all the tie-ins, etc. I thought the writers made too big a deal of it.

But hey, overall the Action and Superman titles were examples of where the new 52 failed, at least imo. In other ways (Aquaman, Green Lantern Corps...at least the early to mid part, Justice League, Martian Manhunter, etc.) it was a success.

It's too convoluted for me to explain to a general fan of superheroes. So that's not doing them any favors. With Powergirl its 'she's Supergirl from an alt. universe who's stuck in this new universe and using another alias...'

With Superdad it's like 'he's Superman from the last DCU, now with a kid/new Superboy in tow as well as the Lois Lane from that universe..'

He has no other connections to this universe aside from Super League and he's gonna be over this universe's Justice League now? I just don't think Batman will be that trusting...
