I honestly don't see why it should be so hard to tell a story about a character being gay. Rucka integrated the aspects of Batwoman's sexuality perfectly into Elegy. The story was interesting, her sexuality didn't dwarf other aspects of the narrative, and the dialogue was natural and flowing.

Now, it's hard to do all of that as well as Rucka did...but this is beyond horrible. Preview pages should make me excited to read a story, not make me roll my eyes at some of the most terrible dialogue I've seen in the reboot.

    • My god is this stupid, why take a already existing character who was clearly straight/bi (Alan Scott was married to a woman), and completely change his sexual orientation? Why not just create a new character, or use one who's sexual orientation had never been revealed (Oh wait that would be the smart thing to do)? Politically correct bullsht. This is nothing more than a publicity stunt.

Which is honestly why I'm fine with changing up aspects of a character, if the story is well told. But this just reeks of, at best, mediocre storytelling.

        • This whole situation makes me wonder how people would react if it was a woman that they did this to. Not calling anyone out but sometimes I swear when they make a female character gay or have a gay situation with the female character you could hea a pin drop in the crowd but when it's a guy the world fucking explodes. So tired of the 'Two Women? Ok!! Two Men? No Way!!' mentality.
I LOVE conspiracy theorists. They are like human versions of the cymbal clapping, dancing monkeys. No one takes them all that seriously and they get bored with them after about 10 minutes.

this could hurt new readers if their friends are using gay jokes about them liking a guy with a "power-ring" (just saying)

Very true, which is generally the situation you run into with sexually frustrated heterosexual men. It's like they're not getting laid, so they have to rain on everyone's parade because vaginas aren't throbbing for them.

I would almost wager a bet that the dudes who are frustrated over Alan Scott being gay, haven't gotten laid in months...or maybe ever.

So now that Alan Scott has been turned gay, his children (Obsidian and Jade) have no doubt been erased completely from DC continuity. At best the decision to turn Alan Scott gay is simply a publicity stunt.

I am not at all pleased with the decision to turn Alan Scott into a homosexual. I honestly think the entire story will probably be as poorly written as Cry for Justice was (another bad James Robinson story).

                          I find it pandering.
Was there this much of a lead up to Batwoman? No.
There should be as much LOOKIE LOOKIE OVER HERE! For a queer character as there is for a straight one.

Honestly? I think the reaction would be very similar if they took a female character with a long history, and established to be straight, and made her an instant lesbian. Where the effect you speak of would come into more play, IMHO, would be in a situation with a NEW gay character being introduced. I'm sure it has SOME effect on how people react to this, but I do think a large part of the reaction to this specific case comes from the fact that Alan was unambiguously straight before, and had a long history, big parts of which are at odds with him being gay (happily married to a woman, two kids, by a DIFFERENT woman- yeah these things are theoretically possible with a gay man, but FAR less likely). It just serves to underline that people aren't JUST losing his long history with this reboot, but the changes to the character mean that history is unlikely to ever be revisited in some form. And the rationale behind it isn't clearly story driven, but "Gee, he had a gay son, who's gone in the reboot. Let's make him gay as a replacement. That'll keep things more balanced.".

                            • I said it before and I'll say it again - the decision to turn Alan Scott gay is nothing more than a publicity stunt. As far as I'm concerned it has no merit, no purpose.

                              • Well the only reason there is a feel of lookie lookie is because Batwoman was a new character. With Alan they are changing a classic character. If it was just a new earth gl I don't think it would be as controversial. But I do agree this is pandering and I get the feeling that DC is just trying any bit of controversy to get people to talk about the JSA or Earth 2 rather. I think they are confusing controversy with relevance.

Ionfan- I think you should worry more about your other activities that people make fun of you for rather than a comic character you have no control over that's in a book you don't read. And how immature or redneck is someone that thinks its funny that a character in a fictional book you may or made not read is gay? And how insecure are you too feel like you're getting screwed over because said character is gay?
