You(not just you specifically btw) can like Deadman now, but to excuse retconning as solely storytelling for new audiences is just feeding the monster. Its not how continuity works and is very simplistic. So of course I'm not going to enjoy an issue that retells an origin making the character an asshole and then ignoring 40years of writing. Its not development if you forcibly add a personality that wasn't there and then change it by the end of the issue, especially when you skip over...again...40 years of continuity. I don't mind Geoff taking the easy way out and retconning Deadman's past so that he was an asshole. What I do mind is that people treating it like some phenomenon as if the character has been the Guy Gardner of acrobats for 40 years and Geoff "fixed" him. Because that's NOT what happened. Just hope I'm making that clear. Now I'm done.

I guess its subjective really. I mean, unnecessary? maybe, I for one think Martian Manhunters story kinda feels shoehorned in to get people interested in him again. Which someone could argue its true for all 12 resurrected. I am enjoying the 'other' green martian story, but not at all necessary in my opinion. Johns & Tomasi are getting new readers interested in these characters without reading 40 years of continuity.

They still feel connected since a lot of the BD stories focus around the origin or a key part of the characters history, but at the same time, the reader knows it is brand new material. So they can essentially 'grow with the character'. I love the Deadman & Aquaman stories, because I hardly read anything with them previously. Thats also why GL & Flash Rebirths are a great jumping on point for new readers.

People read what they like, thats why I stopped reading most marvel titles, because I just wasnt enjoying them. And comics for me is all about entertainment, it shouldnt feel like a chore to read a story.

Dont worry West, I didnt feel like you were personally attacking me, people have opinions and want them heard to share ideas with other people. Thats why these boards are great.

Also, I'd say Dove is early 20's since she's in college, Brand's back at the "peak of his physicality" so around 27-35, still a decent sized gap, but I wouldnt put it as creepy

Shes helping Brand find purpose in life, guiding him in his new role- she's not vital, but she's still a good part of his story.

She had a connection to the Entity prior to the Entity being revealed.

Woah, lets not be too hasty now. I like Dove, and would like to see more Hawk & Dove action, BoP isnt really cutting it for me either with their parts. They should do more, maybe have a mini? I would however consent to this...

so, in the 40 years that the character has been around being a hero, he's just started caring about others? Oh that makes perfect sense... So he was an asshole, fine. So Johns reminds of that, also fine. But what sense does it make to have this moment of clarity when the character has been a hero SINCE then?

I didn't take it that way. Boston specifically mentions that he was a hero trying to help others (which is not disputed). I thought they were saying he was a jerk before he died (which is in continuity), he became a hero after death, but when he was brought back to life (in BD) he was looking for the easy way out. That's not at all the same as saying he never did any selfless act. The ring's just accusing him of having a selfish past and returning to that briefly now. It should also be noted that the ring mentions his worthiness and has still has not abandoned him.
