For Thor just read the Walt Simonson stuff.
See I would've suggested those but I wasn't sure what he meant by modern...so I just went with new, lol.

You'd be hard pressed to find a Iron Man or Thor story from 1959...since you know they didn't exist yet.

This week Fresh Ink Online host Blair Butler is joined by actor Michael McMillian, who you know as vampire-hating evangelist Reverend Steve Newlin from True Blood. You might also know him from his writing work on Lucid and the True Blood comic series. Here, he and Blair run down their top picks of the week, including The Flash, All-New Spider-Man, Aquaman, Secret Avengers, The Ultimates, Brilliant, and Teen Titans.

                          • Anybody else here read X-Factor?

It's easily the most consistently good X-book that isn't named Uncanny X-Force on the stands.

                            • Im fairly new to comics, mostly been a DC fan but looking to expand my reading even further.

More than anything i want to read the best that is out there, so is starting with books like Hellboy, Walking Dead and Sin City: The Hard Goodbye a good start?

                                Yes, also I would recommend

                                1) Chew from Image Comics
                                2) Irredeemable
                                3) Y: The Last Man (it concluded in 2008?) still a good read
                                4) Invincible
                                5) Fear Agent
                                6) Starborn

Those are some quality comics right there.
