Batman #700 PREVIEW
Writer: Grant Morrison
Artist: Tony Daniel, Frank Quitely, Scott Kolins, Andy Kubert & David Finch
-------------------------
Thought it was a pretty good issue. Both Scott Kolins and Tony Daniel's art was not very good, but I really enjoyed each segment. I got a nice fun 60's vibe from the first segment, which was probably intentional on Morrison's part. For a while I thought he stole the plot from the 1966 movie, but turns out he didn't.
It was an absolute joy to see Frank Quitely drawing Batman and Robin again. If only he was faster we could get more art out of him. And this was clearly far from his best work. *sigh* Anyway, I definitely found myself disappointed with Scott Kolins' work here. We saw him finishing up some Jock pages in Detective Comics a couple of months back so it was no surprise to see his name listed as a Quitely backup. Unfortunately Scott got the approval to use this new style of his on this book. For some reason I think Mike Marts was just surprised as I was to see it.
Needless to say, Andy Kubert was fucking amazing. Love his work. I didn't think I'd ever see future Damian again! I think this was my favorite part of the issue/story. Damian's on a mission to save the city, save a little boy, and while the clock counts down until a villain(2-Face-2,ha!) he's on his own countdown because his air supply won't last for much longer. Moving on, this was my second taste of David Finch art (the first being X-Men: Second Coming). I enjoyed my first outing with him, but found a couple of pages here a bit lacking. It almost felt like Second Coming a bit, with his Batman looking a lot like Cable. I also want to point out that Finch's Batman Beyond was done very well. And this is coming from I guy who is not at all interested in that character. I never expected to see Batman Beyond in this book, even after reading that Finch would do "And Tomorrow".
The pinups were shit. Well, not necessarily shit, but they did nothing for me. And some of them I had even seen elsewhere(Nguyen & Tan). Still, all in all it was a good issue. A simple Batman case that reflected the various points of Batman and Gotham City.
