  • Your ideal HAL JORDAN

I see alot of complaints about how HAL is characterised so I ask what would the members of the board want to see in HAL? What should his job be? toy salesman?,air force pilot?,test pilot?,or some other occupation. We all complain about how HAL is portrayed but I never see any suggestions.

We mostly agree HAL is confident sometimes brash a natural leader, but I think historically he has been a hard character to write about. Hence the reason we have seen so many lame incarnations.......Is HAL boring? if so how would he be made more exciting?.........This post isnt just about how HAL is being portrayed currently it is about what you would love to see........

An ideal Hal Jordan is a character shown as being over-confident, but with enough self-awareness as to not come off as a huge dick. Another key ingredient is maximizing his leadership qualities. Hal isn't an administrative type leader, he's an action based leader who displays his qualities more through action than bureaucracy. Proven by the shitty job he's done so far in leading the GLC with the Guardians being gone. Also, he's a risk taker, which is demonstrated perfectly by being a pilot.

I don't think Hal is a difficult character to write, really. The problem is that he's not very complex, so any sort of interesting thing you do to the character has to come from an external medium. That's the case for a lot of comic book characters though, so he's not alone in that.

Hal needs to get laid. Seriously. He's constantly chasing after a psychobitch who makes no sense. And he's placed around super hot chicks frequently and not even attracted at all? Come on. When Hal hooked up with Arisia, etc, that was fun. I'm not talking just about seeing some characters hook up. But it's not as boring when they have an actual relationship. The dialog is boring because all the GL talk about is forced-sounding in-fighting that we know is going nowhere. It was interesting when Hal had long conversations with unique GLs. All we get now is endless bitching with Kilowog or Earth GLs. Where are the unique GLs to bounce philosophy off of? Also, there needs to be real character deaths/conversions that they react to. All we've got in the last bunch of years is some minor character die, and then we got an entire issue about his mourning family. That was too lame. Hal turned into a bad guy at one point. He was banished from Earth at another. Then he gave up his ring. Those kind of developments are exciting. But why expect us to waste our time thinking up the developments for the DC writers? Either they have to take chances, the management has to get out of their way and let them, or fire the writers and get some with balls (like me).

            Yo.

            ^^^ = BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

but as for the Q asked: Hal is a cocky, confident & competent do-er, but since yur not really allowed to be all of those things nowadays w/o having some serious flaws in yur makeup OR having some kind of trauma in yur past, he'll have to be reconfigured into the guy we got from the animated JL:W recently.

and while I agree w/wat JV said, I dont think he *needs to be* a very complex character since the book is supposed to be about the superheroics moving him, and not the angst DRIVING him.

Maybe a bit cocky, a bit of humour to him, but not too much as that's mainly Guy's job (along with sometimes Kyle).

I'm not really a big Hal fan but right now I'm finding him boring. So much so that now I only read Red Lanterns and GL:NG out of the GL range. Might as well write a list for all GLs:

              Hal:
A bit cocky with some humour but not too much. Heroic and kind. And he should get over Carol and find a new chick, not a superhero or villain though, just a normal woman, go back to basics.

              Guy:
Guy's pretty much perfect right now. Guy's really growing on me, especially since reading Red Lanterns. I think he's perfect as a RL and should stay as one. He's funny and violent, what more do you want?

              John:
I haven't read GLC in months now, but from what I remember, John had gotten too serious, boring and a bit too "lovey dovey" but in a boring way. I'd model him a bit on how he was in JLU. Have him as a strong passionate character, but not at all soppy. Kind and caring but determined, strong and can take an insult as well as a punch. No more of this sad "I'm fed up as my wife died in the 90s" John, it's about time he got over her and started enjoying life as a GL. Maybe not enjoy too much, but not be too depressing either.

              Kyle:
I like Kyle a bit how he is, but I prefer old Kyle. But now though, I'd change him a bit. Just a bit. In the 90s, he was originally conceived to be trendy, relatable for young people and fashionable. I think that element of him is fading away a bit. He needs a trendier costume but without V neck collars and bits of useless armour (he has a cosmic power ring, why would he need armour for?). Maybe have a unique logo again; homage to the older ones but something a bit more modern and up to date. Hair - I'd go for a really 2010s maybe hipster haircut. Although I hate hipsters, I could easily see Kyle as one. Maybe have shortish sides with a longer top. But underneath the looks, go back to basics with the character. Charming, cheeky at times humorous guy who always flirts with women. Have him basically be a teenager again, not too young though. Basically more like he was in his early days.

              Baz:
              Dead.

I guess I think of Hal as a fearless, always jump in guys; a bit of a ladies' man and fiercely loyal to his friends but not having a lot of them and dedicated to the corps.

Personality wise, to me Hal Jordan is a young Captain Kirk. I particularly like the Chris Pine version. Every time I watch Pine in the Star Trek remake, it screams Hal Jordan to me. Over confident, cocky, makes mistakes but has the ability to overcome them. Pride and ego are faults of his. Good to his friends and loved ones, but can come off as unprepared for life because he flies by the seat of his pants. Comes up with a plan on the way instead of in advance like Batman. I don't want the slacker elements of Hal to completely disappear, but the guy's not a loser. I don't want him to be perfect and win at everything, but the guy is not a fucking idiot.

I want Hal to work as a test pilot at Ferris Aircraft again. Maybe have him stuck in a managerial role and he keeps trying to find ways to get back in the cockpit even though he's supposed to be behind a desk. That would add a layer of conflict for him outside of the costume. And him being outside of the costume IS something that is missing from the book. I want him to continue having adventures in space and I love the space opera aspect of the book...but when was the last time Green Lantern set foot on Earth? He needs to maintain a job and SOMETHING resembling a life on Earth. He just can't be in space for 40 issues in a row.

Here is goes. I would make him something I coined as Moderen Silerage. Same costumes and concepts as the old stuff but written in a smart way to be entertaining for adults and kids alike. That is just simply put.

I would like to see Hal stressed over the the loss of the guardians. Really take stock of if the Green Lantern Corps even has a right to exisist without super godlike creaures backing them. When he gets to the conclusion of no. He sets up a council. Hal is the leader and the final call wrong or right is his,but the GLC leadership has to be more round table.

I want to see the GLC get thier power back. I am tired of Half powered GL's. They have way to big a job and way to much space to cover to be scaled back to make other Super heroes look more important. Green Lantern has to be the ultimate cop. Some one robs a bank, you Call Batman. Somone builds a giant robot and is attacking a city You call Superman. If there is a full scale invasion of your planet you call a GL. And with all the problems Earth has IE a event every month it might be a good idea to leave a few permnant on Earth.

There is you excuse to bring Kyle back to his roots on Erath. Ora good reason why Earth neeeds so many human Green Lanterns.

That is just the begining. Green Lantern is a huge toy box of super cool super fun Ideas, and if a writter has trouble writting with it. Then they need to move on.

For those of you who want Hal to return to being a test pilot, bravo. His original casting as a Chuck Yeager "Right Stuff" risk taker (with an intensely private side) was a slice of American culture in 1959. For Hal to be relevant to a modern audience, he needs to rediscover those fearless roots. The Green Lantern persona is a reflection of the man, not the other way around. So what element of world society today requires somebody really, truly fearless? It needs to be something (1) flexible, so he can get away to deal with sector crises and universal dilemmas; (2) challenging, so he doesn't get bored (no more truck driving jobs or toy sales, please!); (3) plausible; and (4) lucrative enough that he can get his own apartment again, have babes over, maybe even a steady girl.

I don't envision any of this happening on Earth. Hal needs to be demoted and move on to another sector, where his sector partner also becomes his love interest. One name springs to mind immediately. Dorine. In the Old Continuity, she was left behind with her people on a world reclaimed from Evil Star's worst temper tantrum. What has become of them? If not Dorine, then a Dorine type, is needed to spice things up. Definitely an alien. That was the most fun part about his affair with Arisia.

A decision has to be made about whether Jordan is a dork, a sycophant, or a highly-trained technician. Nobody who flies jets for a living is a basically stupid person. Hal is in his element when he is solving complex problems, not just battling villains. Some of the pointless action-adventure should be sacrificed for that rarest of comic elements, drama. "Hal makes a decision" is better writing than "Hal in trouble," but also harder to pull off.

I guess to some degree I'm being influenced right now by GL:TAS, which we're re-watching in honor of 2/8/14. We enjoyed the Steam Lantern episode tonight. Nothing was as gripping as the moment Hal had to choose between saving himself and saving his new friends.

The power of will is found at the deepest level of your being. It's more than mere rules. It's a duty that you must honor.

I agree with everything but the love intrest and the right Stuff. Don't get me wrong I love that version of Hal,but with all the crap DC did to Carol and Tom,it just would not feel right to me without them.

I think,The big thing is to put out all the fires all the current creative team has started. As much as I would like a reboot,I am just so sick of DC doing that, despite how much I want the Guardians back.

I would like to see Hal be a pilot, but a space pilot. Less yeager more Captain Kirk. Flyies arond in a cool spaceship picking up a new chick each week. It's not that I have a problem with steady love intrests it has just been done so much that I am sick of it.

GL is just one big sinking ship right now. Every new issue just shows you they sank a little than last issue. I do not envy the guy who has to write them out of the fire once they finally admit that there is a problem.
