you really think it was golden? do you mind listing what u thought were the best parts of the film? as well as what u werent happy with? im not trying to start a fight or anything, i just want to know why you found it to be so great, i will respect your opinions as i hope u respect mine.
No worries man. What I meant was, that it was golden compared to the movies I listed. I did a quick review a cpl pages back where I talked about it and rated it an 8/10. Yeah, its not perfect, but I didn't go in expecting it to be, and I didn't read any professional reviews to bum me out beforehand. I went in completely neutral and excited to see Green Lantern come to life! The small things that they did change are understandable for a movie, and the general population couldn't care less about Qward, how and why the yellow ring was forged, who Hector Hammond is in the comics, or how important Parallax really is to the overall history of the Green Lantern. I mean, hell, 4 supporting GL's with recurring roles in the comics were killed after only 5 minutes of airtime! I mean, think about it; no one has EVER complained that Batman (1989) sucked because it didn't stay true to the comics, because the Joker never died... Some of these things were altered or removed so that those who've never read a comic wouldn't be subject to a lengthy and confusing history lesson. For the most part, it stayed true to the comics. Everyone was who they were supposed to be; in some way everyone important filled their proper roles and destiny; and costumes and set designs stayed fairly true to the comics. Those are what are important. Its to be expected these days that CBM's will be altered to appeal to the masses, not the fans. Sometimes they go a little overboard, and sometimes they get it perfect. That part is based on your opinion, and mine was that they did as much justice as they could with what and who they had to work with. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and hope you can see it again and feel the same way.

      • Just read your second review, Supes, and I agree with a lot of things you mentioned about the editing, the corps, and training. I felt exactly like you about no corps for the first few minutes after, but my forgiveness for this is that its a movie about a superhero, not a corps. If the movie had been titled, Green Lantern Corps, then it would've made sense. This movie was more about Hal's introduction. I have a gut feeling that the corps will play a more important role in the second movie. As for the training; I spent six years in the Army, and I know about training. I really enjoyed what little bit they showed of it and wished there was more. of course, Half-a-day's training is not going to make you the only being able to defeat parallax. But that's the way the cookie crumbles. The makers wanted to give a general idea of what training was like without taking too much away from the idea of Hal being a superhero. These type of movies are about one major hero. No one (Genpop) wants to see Superman go through basic training. Its detrimental to the image of a superhero for those who don't read comics. Stereotype says their perfect, and the best at what they do. It would've been degrading to see Hal as a private being told to what to do, like a child. People wouldn't have taken him as seriously, and would default to the idea that Killowog, Sinestro, and Tomar-re were better and stronger than him; which at the moment they are, but what sense does it make for a human superhero to be weaker than anyone else? Like I said, its not perfect, but makes sense to tell a solid generalized story to the masses.

        • Like Cinema it has a A LOT of wrong things. As a fan of the seventh art, I can not lie...
And I do understand the critics, altought, after watched the movie, I think the hate is total ridiculous.
The two major problems, general audience perspective, are: script and runtime.
All about the money, lower runtime = more showtimes per day. I blame the studio.

BUT It was impossible to see the movie as simply Cinema, because I am a fan of Green Lantern.
And as a fan, it was very very good.
Again, as a fan, there´s nothing I dislked!
Let´s hope the movie makes a good BO worldwide "to greenlight" the sequel.

          • I saw it yesterday afternoon with the family and liked it a lot. I have no idea why the critics are being as harsh as they are, other than that they are tired of the superhero genre and are holding those movies to a tougher standard now. I went in with lowered expectations and was for the most part happy with what I got. I'd say a B-, or an 8/10. 3 out of 5 stars.

            Spoilers below:

I was ok with most of the changes to the mythos and Hal's origin. It's a movie adaption and I made peace with tying Hal, Abin, Hammond, Parallax and Krona's fates together like they did. It did seem like Hammond was a weaker part of the movie and I could have done without him, but it's not the end of the world.

Oa was fantastic. I loved the landscape and buildings and Hal's flying scene with Tomar. The Guardians and alien corpsmen were great to see on the big screen.

Blake Lively was a lot better than I thought she was going to be. Her acting was much better than the trailers alluded to and her hair was darker than I thought it would be. Was it as good as a young Demi Moore? No, but she was passable. Waller, Hammond's dad, Carl Ferris were all window dressing, but nothing wrong with them. The fanboy in me was wishing for a Nell Carter-like Waller, but oh well.

            A few complaints/criticisms:

The score was so lackluster that it was very noticable. Especially when Hal comes back. That portion of the movie is just one scene after another that isn't put together as well as it should have been and a stronger score should have been used to guide the movie along. I'm a big believer in the score being able to tell a story without words, and this score failed miserably. Not even a memorable theme for our hero.

The editing in some places is shaky. For one, I think Hal's training sequence needed to be edited better to show the passage of time. A montage music part would have helped. It wasn't that his training was too short; it was that they didn't make Hal's training APPEAR long enough. Didn't we learn anything from 1980s montage scenes?

I'm not a big fan of Hollywood's love affair with having two villains in every movie. Hammond wasn't worth all the time of the movie he ate up.

Finally, while the mid-end credits reveal was cool, it killed any drama and suspense the second movie could have done with it. That was a whole movie given away in 10 seconds.

Other than those things, the movie was a fun summer popcorn flick. Sure I was hoping for the Godfather of superhero flicks originally, but I'm happy this wasn't Daredevil or Fantastic Four. I'd say this wasn't as good as Iron Man, but better than Iron Man 2 or Thor, both of which I enjoyed.

It was great. I don´t see the "given away" thing. As his dialogue in the movie, as a GL fan, you do understand his intentions. Great.

                  • I am not sure how movies work with product placement....I would assume the company who owns the product pays for the placement....so of the 300 mil total....a few mil had to be recouped by the LG phone product placement right? I mean they zoomed in so tight on that phone it was impossible to notice that it was the LG Revolution.

funny thing i agree with u on almost every level, i guess i just expected more from this film, and it didnt help that it was badly put together and badly written, maybe when i see a second time ill like it a bit more, but i know i wont love it. thank u for ur response and thanks for ur military service

                        • I think they covered the lack of training by giving the few tips they did. I mean The whole sun's gravity thing. Hal did not fight like an experienced warrior. He fought like he did not know what he was doing. The only thing that made him seem strong was the will he had to win. Sure I wish it had more training but what he had I loved!

                              ok but still...........

some of that 159 million dollars couldve gotten a better editor though,

like i said before many times i enjoyed the film but the whole jumping from scene to scene is what really dragged this film for me expecially in the middle of the film.

i couldve done without parallax in the film

i mentioned in flash chat yesterday that they shouldve used major force as a villain and i know hes from kyles run but it wouldve been better than that parallax fight....
