Personally, I don't believe either of those movies will do as well as people seem to be expecting, but if they do, they're both still looking at around $20 mil each that weekend, which shouldn't be too much competition. Fast Five made $40 mil the weekend Thor opened to $65 mil. GL should be able to get at least $60. At that point in the summer (school's out, weather's hot, peoplel looking for blockbusters) it could do better, especially if reviews and word of mouth are good going in.
i dont give a shit what the box office says im reviewing gl for myself.

i have high expectations because martin campbell is a great director.

ive said it before i never cared for any of the old james bond films but i did enjoy casino royal.

i even enjoyed both zorro films he has done.

now if wb went and got bret ratner to do gl i think id say xmen 3 2.0

    • I wonder how much effect on the numbers it will have that the director of the movie is essentially telling people NOT to see it in 3D. I wasn't planning on doing so, anyway, but if I was, that would give me pause.

campbell said that? i give him even more credit now because with how big corporations are today they think 3d is this big huge deal.

now i admit i never saw any film in 3d yet but if hollywood focuses on the full film in 3d i think that could be great and worth the price people pay at the theatre.

i read an article over at ign a few months back saying the porn industry is beating hollywood with the 3d technology films

        • I don't think Campbell actually ever said that. He just said that he's not a fan of post-conversion 3D, but honestly, who is.

                    Technically, I said "post-conversion 3D".

                      • If any one can make post conversion look as good as shot in, Lucas and ILM can. Still not thrilled about the Phantom Menace being done first, but might as well start with the least popular one while the 3D push is going on. People would go see re-releases of most of the other SW films regardless of 3D anyway.

I dunno, the quotes I read from him seemed pretty dismissive of 3D being added to THIS movie. Maybe I'm misremembering, but he seemed pretty clearly negative about it. (Maybe that's because GL IS post-conversion 3D.)

If the Hangover, Kun Fu panda and Pirates 4 could extract 200M+ from the american public last weekend, how well could GL do on it's first weekend? What other movies are out on the 27th --that weekend?

65-70 million for GL would be decent?
People(including myself) saw a bunch of movies this weekend because it was an extended weekend. Not to mention Hangover, Panda, Pirates and Fast Five are all established films. Something X-Men will have and Green Lantern won't.

He is being kind of "blarg" about the 3D in GL, but he's not telling anyone explicitly not to watch it in 3D. So far the only feedback we've heard about the 3D is that the trailer looked great, and the super-secret screening was "too dark". So far, I'll take that as a good sign. I'm at least going to see it once in 3D myself.

Yeah, I guess I was exaggerating a bit. I mean of course he didn't EXPLICITLY tell people not to see it in 3D. But from where I'm sitting if the director is THAT unenthusiastic about the 3D, I'm inclined to give it a pass.
