It was one of those oddities I came across a couple of years ago. Most people who have heard of Green Lantern, think he’s black.

When I say “most people”, I’m not talking comic readers. Comic readers are not most people.

And, indeed, most people have never actually heard of Green Lantern.

But of those who have, they are more likely to have come across Green Lantern on the more recent Justice League cartoons, than have read the comic. And the Green Lantern who appears in that cartoon? John Stewart. An human Green Lantern – who happens to be black. The choice of Lantern was clearly made to diversify the otherwise horrendously white (and green) team – something that has often not bothered the comic book version.

So, with these millions of viewers who believe that Green Lantern is black, a number seem to have been surprised to see the trailer for the movie. Which shows the white Green Lantern character portrayed by a white actor.

And Twitter is exploding.

You know, around now would be a really good time for DC and/or Warner to mention that Nick Jones is actually going to playing John Stewart in the movie.

Before you get steamed, try to remember just because these folks are not comic book fans, it doesn't make their opinions any less valid.

Yeah, I can see why they'd make the mistake. I wasn't a comic fan when JL came out, but I remember having similar thoughts because I had seen Hal Jordan in an episode of Superfriends. I guess it's all relative.

If they were only exposed to it from a tv show how does it make them morons? They just dont know any better. Asking the general public to do research about a comic book movie is like asking Batman to take the Joker out for a Dinner to celebrate his many accomplishments. I will say to you guys what I said to the Batfans. Instead of bitching these people out use this as your teachable moment. Explain to them the history if the GL's and how there are more than one and yes there is a black one but he was not the first. If you take the time to do this instead barking at peopl and telling they are idiots you end with some new fans who will then want to go and do the research. Barking on people will just make them say well "gee the Green Lantern comic fans are dicks" and they will want nothing to do with it. Embrace new fans with knwledge of what you love as opposed to alienating them by wasting a teachable moment.
