  • I'm surprised by it, but I'd be even more surprised if they solicited issues then didn't release them. What's the motive for doing that, when they could, even more easily, have not solicited it at all (they already knew the show was cancelled LONG before they released the solicits)?

I don't expect the comic to stick around, but I'd be surprised if the solicited issues weren't released.

It’s on the May solicitation so it’s happening. Besides DC has published comics based off TV shows months after their final episodes.

      • DC could make a direct to dvd movie that wraps up any loose ends

Can they do that without CN's involvement? I honestly don't know how these sorts of things work. Does CN somehow have some stake in the show even after it stops airing it?

Such a move strikes me as low probability, anyway, but I'm curious whether it is even possible.

          • I think CN just has broadcast rights, WB still owns all character rights and such.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is a shoot off of the Batman cartoon which was broadcast on FOX but released by Warners.

a quick look shows that CN is just the broadcaster and since wb owns CN i dont see why they couldnt. It would be a nice thing for the fans since all these hokey support drives at least show theres a market for it.

DC Comics and Cartoon Network may share the same owner but they are completely separate mediums. DiDio & Lee aren't concerning themselves with GLTAS ratings. Once MARKETING tells them GLTAS is no longer a viable option(which is obviously the case with its new bimonthly schedule), then they pull the plug. But its not as if Geoff Johns rings up Dan and says "GLTAS is getting cancelled. Yeah. Yeah. About 2 months from now. How's the wife? Good. Good. Yep. Okay Dan. Gotta go. Bye!"

WB owning Cartoon Network is exactly why a Direct-to-DVD isn't likely. They want as many eyes on the network as possible. We're lucky to still be getting DC Animated movies, Warner Premiere was almost 100% gone a few months ago.

              • i was just throwing it out there to try to keep the doom and gloom to a respectable level.

I know its unlikely but DC has done worse things before.

Not quite sure what you are trying to get across here. I never said anything about them caring about GLTAS ratings. I assume, though, given how little the comic already sells, that they would be interested in the show's continued EXISTENCE. I just figured that, without a show on the air, there would be little incentive to continue a comic that sells so little. Certainly, if the GL Animated comic was selling like gangbusters, I don't for an instant think they would stop putting it out just because the show ended. They might change the title, at most. But that's never been the case.

                  • Smallville still has a comic and its been off air for 2 years and half of its seasons the show was mediocre.

As much as I would love that to happen, it won’t. All of the DC animated films are now Batman, Superman or Justice League (with a Batman / Superman centered story).

We were lucky to get two Green Lantern movies as it is (and the second one was only because of the live action movie that was coming out at the time, which was the same reason why we got the cartoon).

My post was a long winded way of saying "No, DC Comics probably DIDNT know long before."

Mediocre, perhaps, yet well-recieved enough that they kept renewing it. And the Smallville comic sells a LOT better than the GLTAS comic. More than three times as much, I think.

Really? We knew the show was cancelled weeks before the May solicits were released. Why would DC be more in the dark than us?

I know a couple weeks isn't really a lot of time in a comic's production schedule, but my point was that, if they WERE planning to not release the May issue, they knew the show was canned in plenty of time to pull the solicit. The fact that they solicited it tells me they had already made the decision to actually put out that issue.

But that’s just me because I see CN executives as being idiots.
Well, what I was saying was, by the time the solicits were released, it was already a couple weeks AFTER CN had publicly announced the show's cancellation. If they were going to yank the issue, they wouldn't have bothered to solicit it in the first place.

it kept getting renewed because cw didnt have anything worthwhile in its place.

Same thing thats happening with supernatural, and will probably happen with arrow.

but you are right about it selling a crapload more.
