Just thought I'd throw this out there. I never remembered the endgame events of "Mosaic" ever being mentioned until I read Darkstars #24 just now.

If a bit before that, I think Mister Ed is right and there was a whirlwind of creative plans -- both creative and editorial -- all over the place.

Now, now, let's not get nasty.
(Don't forget, it was Kyle's arrival on the scene, and the need for him to be the one-and-only, that completely scuttled John's Mosaic development in the first place.)

I meant that in the nicest possible way of course.
Shatner is a great actor, a damn fine police officer, and a great Starship captain, and a pretty good defense attorney.

As for John's time as a Guardian...ugh. Mention it in passing as a joke sometime if they want (like they made fun of Guy's time with the yellow ring last issue), but there isn't a story here to chase.
Besides, temporarily becoming an omnipotent god is a rite of passagealmost every high powered super hero has to make at least once during their publishing history. It's like a man's first beer in the superhero world!

I think it's one of the first things they forgot when they started revamping GL, and I think it was an Oh Shit moment because the rumblings were there to put out Emerald Twilight, and I think they decided it was best to leave well enough alone. And good - no need to fix that plot hole.
I'm starting to ramble...going to bed.

And at any rate, I don't believe it was planned all along. I'm fairly certain it was indicative of what I'd nickname "Last Ride Writer's Syndrome." What I mean is, editorial has told you they're canning your book 2 or 3 months out... you have -- within reason -- carte blanche to have your book "go out in a blaze of glory" however you see fit. You naturally, then, shake things up as best as you can, stir the pot as heartily as allowed, to ensure that even though your book is cancelled, the waves will be felt for years to come -- at least in theory.
So I'd say... yeah, if the whole deal with Emerald Twilight/Parallax/Kyle hadn't come down, Mosaic might have lasted a bit longer as-was... but I don't think John would have become a Guardian (at least any longer than over the course of a single story arc).
