      Greg Rucka on "Action Comics"

      From Supermanhomepage.com:

November 27, 2008: Greg Rucka Comments on "Action Comics" Without Superman
Action Comics #871 On the back of Dan DiDio announcing that Superman would be vacating the pages of "Action Comics" and leaving it to the new Flamebird and Nightwing, the Superman Homepage contacted writer Greg Rucka to get his take on the new title.

We asked him, as the newly announced writer of the book, why Superman fans should continue to purchase "Action Comics" if Superman wasn't in it?

"You cannot have a DCU without Superman. He is the foundation upon which the rest of the universe rests. In all sincerity, I mean that," explains Rucka. "And while Superman will not be obviously present in Action, everything that happens, everything that Nightwing and Flamebird do, is absolutely influenced and guided by him. To say more would be to give away the story, not solely in Action but in the other titles as well."

"I've never been very good at waving the banner and shouting "read this! read this!" and I absolutely understand hesitation at picking up an Action Comics where Superman is not seen. Hopefully, when the time comes, the work will go some lengths to explaining what is happening, and why, and how Superman's presence, even when he himself is absent, is always felt, and always inspiring."

We look forward to Greg's run on "Action Comics" as we continue to review the title during his run.

I love Greg Rucka's work. He is one of the industries best, but there is no way that I'm going to pick up Action Comics that not only has no Superman, but stars two characters I could care less for. If anything I'll pick it up in trade...

I'm now thinking Dick will become Batman, Tim will stay as Robin, while Damien goes and becomes Nightwing, with Jason Todd going the Red Robin route (again) and Tommy Elliot biting the dust... all by the end of the Battle for the Cowl storyline.
Do good. Be well. Make happy.

Battle for the Cowl will have to be superbly written (and not to mention long) to make Dick Grayson become Batman let alone the other stuff. If Dick wanted to be Batman, he would have stayed as Robin. The whole point of the Nightwing identity was to escape from Bruce, and now he has. He has his own identity so why do something drastic like that.

I think Tim Drake is better suited as the next Batman, if there was ever to be one, because he gets more like Bruce after every issue I read. Especially this last issue which showcases just how hard Robin has to work in Gotham once the Batman is gone. I can see Damien creating a new identity or taking the Red Robin identity above anything else. Damien has become sort of a dark Tim Drake who is just looking for acceptance, and I like that for him.

Tommy Elliot, even after Dini's good job with him in Detective Comics RIP "tie-in", should have never returned. If he bites the dust, then I'm super happy(again).

I'm thinking Dick as Bats, Tim as Nightwing, and maybe Damien as (Red) Robin. Dick was the first Robin, so it still seems natural that he become Bats.

I believe that is Bruce asked him, Dick would become Batman, even though he is Nightwing.

Dick as Batman, Damian as Robin, Tim as either the Nightwing of Flamebird & Nightwing or temporarily retired, and Jean Paul Valley or Jason Todd as Red Robin.

And I don't base this on much of anything.

Can you honestly say that with a straight face? Tim Drake as the Nightwing with Flamebird? That's fucking stupid. He's got no reason call himself Nightwing, he's got no reason to be in Metropolis, or any reason to be in Action Comics. Rucka said that Flamebird and Nightwing would be "guided and influenced" by Superman, if that's the case, then that should cancel out both Tim and Drake, out of sheer history that Dick and Tim are Batman's proteges and have little ties to Superman at all. NO WRITER in the business could convince me that Dick Grayson/Tim Drake need to be Action Comics under the guidance of Superman. PERIOD.

Jason Todd as the Nightwing of Flamebird & Nightwing then, maybe?

And that is almost painful to type. Was there anyone, even a single person out there clamoring for the return of Kandor's Flamebird & Nightwing angle from decades ago?

                                Yep, yep.

I do seem to remember Didio in an interview, one of the ones where he pretty much said he didn't "get" Dick as Nightwing. In it he did mention, "And Nightwing isn't even an original character of Dick's... the real Nightwing is from Kandor," blah blah.
