  • PETA Asks Ben & Jerry's to use Human Breast Milk

PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk
Group Says Move Would Help Humans, Cows

WATERBURY, Vt. -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow's milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman.

"PETA's request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow's milk in the food he serves," the statement says.

PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk

PETA officials say a move to human breast milk would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health.

"The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn't make sense," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Everyone knows that 'the breast is best,' so Ben & Jerry's could do consumers and cows a big favor by making the switch to breast milk."

"We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child," said a spokesperson for Ben and Jerry's.

    September 23, 2008

Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, Cofounders

    Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc.

Dear Mr. Cohen and Mr. Greenfield,

On behalf of PETA and our more than 2 million members and supporters, I'd like to bring your attention to an innovative new idea from Switzerland that would bring a unique twist to Ben and Jerry's.

Storchen restaurant is set to unveil a menu that includes soups, stews, and sauces made with at least 75 percent breast milk procured from human donors who are paid in exchange for their milk. If Ben and Jerry's replaced the cow's milk in its ice cream with breast milk, your customers-and cows-would reap the benefits.

Using cow's milk for your ice cream is a hazard to your customer's health. Dairy products have been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies, constipation, obesity, and prostate and ovarian cancer. The late Dr. Benjamin Spock, America's leading authority on child care, spoke out against feeding cow's milk to children, saying it may play a role in anemia, allergies, and juvenile diabetes and in the long term, will set kids up for obesity and heart disease-America's number one cause of death.

Animals will also benefit from the switch to breast milk. Like all mammals, cows only produce milk during and after pregnancy, so to be able to constantly milk them, cows are forcefully impregnated every nine months. After several years of living in filthy conditions and being forced to produce 10 times more milk than they would naturally, their exhausted bodies are turned into hamburgers or ground up for soup.

And of course, the veal industry could not survive without the dairy industry. Because male calves can't produce milk, dairy farmers take them from their mothers immediately after birth and sell them to veal farms, where they endure 14 to17 weeks of torment chained inside a crate so small that they can't even turn around.

The breast is best! Won't you give cows and their babies a break and our health a boost by switching from cow's milk to breast milk in Ben and Jerry's ice cream? Thank you for your consideration.

    Sincerely,

    Tracy Reiman

    Executive Vice President

I am a vegan, I do lots of volunteer work for animals and animal rights. Do I think PETA is bat-shit crazy? Yes.

I agree with putting Humans and Animals on an even field in terms of respect and treatment. But if it ever comes to a point where you have to choose between a Human and an Animal, the human should always win, no qualifiers, not "if", "and" or "but"s. PETA falls short in that respect, elevating animals to a higher level than humans. I would be estatic if Ben & Jerry's changed from cow's milk, but their are far better alternatives to breast milk. Breast milk could raise a lot of ethical and health concerns. The transportation and the pasterization of breast milk would probably warrent new laws in the United States as well, and be prohibitly expensive. Where as, rice milk, would be signifigantly cheaper, more healthy, and not carry any social stigmas or require new legislation to be passed.

When I hear PETA brought up, I can only think to myself "Sigh".

          HAHAHA!

for the mothers who will volunteer to give their breast milk (hopefully, they all belong to PETA):
          - put a bell around their neck
          - punch an i.d. tag on their ears
          - enclose them within a fence so they wont stray
          - make sure they eat lots of hay
          - and keep them in a secure place every night so deviant teenagers won't be tempted to go mommy-tipping
When hope, compassion and love are gone; For rage, avarice and fear have won

From the center the green shall alight; By will and justice shinning bright

To those who dwell in evil's might; Beware my power

Although I realize this is satire, I do really wish cows where treated even that well.

              i agree, cid.

for the sake of supply&demand, animal resources are being abused. i can understand PETA's logic but sometimes, they're bordering on the insane. the bottom line is, humans have the power to save other species. but to make an animal a human's equal? they're something inherently wrong with that way of thinking...

Agreed, speciesism is something that is a byproduct of evolution, and something we should not ignore, but it should not allow us to use it as a blanket for mistreatment of other species.

after watching the video andrew posted about his daughter simply emphasizes the point that:

in a situation where an animal (cow) or a human (baby) is in danger and you can only save one, i would choose the baby without a moment's hesitation no matter how much milk the cow gives. no contest, hands down, no brainer.

PETA doesn't seem to understand that Cows dont have an issue giving milk... and most don't have an issue with being eaten, since they don't even known its happening. Besides, if we all stopped eating meat, do you realize what would happen to our crops? All the fucking animals would eat them, and humans would be left starving (no bullshit)... PETA just doesn't get it.

This sorta makes me gag, just the thought of someone's body fluids in products...yuck.

I had someone in my college PC class a while back who's a big PETA supporter...stood up one day after debating over the issue of a human's life being saved or that of a animal...and hands down he said he would let a human die over the life of an animal. It's really, really sad and if you ask me, it's disillusionment. But I'm not here to start trouble. Just giving my thoughts.

I don't care what PETA thinks, I'm still an old fashioned red meat guy. And I'm definitely all for cow's milk.

                      *sigh*

It really comes to a point where you begin to wonder,

Are the people behind peta serious when they say shit like this?

Or is this more crazy crap spouted just to get their name back in the news again.

This is the product of 70 years of Disney. Years and years of happy animals playfully romping through the forest have led enough people to believe that is actually what goes on in the wilderness.
