Won't happen, and if it does. There's no way that the cast from the first three will be signed on and start filming in time to meet that release.
They may not meet that deadline, with or without new cast members, but 5 million to hold on to the franchise rights of such a valuable film property is good business.
They are putting a lot into this movie. It will clearly have a huge budget, and Im guessing Sony has tons of cash, because from that article, it seems like the 5 million was an advance for JUST Spider-Man 4 and the rights to Spider-Man will go back to Marvel Studios after its release.
haven't we learned that the Spidey movies can't handle more than one villain?
They can't handle two villains if one of them is brought in late in the production of the movie, and late in the movie. With better pacing, Spider-Man 3 could have been a much better film. And in a way, Spider-Man 2 had two villains as well: Doc Ock and Harry Osborn. And that worked out okay.
