  • So this is what asking for a little respect gets ya

my hours have been cut, the amount of days i work have been cut, me helping out in other departments have been cut and all i asked for was a little respect ()

a few weeks ago we at my store (not aloud to name said store if a want to keep my job ) started a new program were they call everyone to recognized others for all their/there/they're good deeds at the store and give them a little something to show to the others just how better they are when it comes to the rest of us .............................. and they pick the guy that only works 2 days out of the work-week (). When i called them on it asking where's mine ( yes i know i Kanye West the poor guy but i said i was sorry to him later) they all laugh and went on about their/there/they're business and that all my past deeds don't count with this new program. Later the boss got with me and said she couldn't tell if i was being serious or just making a laugh, when i told her i was being serious and then listed off everything i've done for that store

    1) when it snowed last month i worked 2 weeks with no days off what so ever (didn't see the other guy pull that one off)

    2) work in 2 other departments that i hate above all other departments (the other guy doesn't, he only works one if you can ever get him to stop talking that is)

    3) my phone number is in every MODs phone so they can call me whenever they need me (i'm sure his phone number is known but wither they use it or not i don't know)

    4) have been at that store going on 15 years (he hasn't been their/there/they're a year yet)

    5) have been a MOD myself, a key-holder plus i've even closed the store up when needed to back in the day (not the other guy)

    6) am always the one they know they can call on then they need help, h@ll it's gotten to the point where they don't even ask me if a want too or not they just do it and tell me about it later even after the schedules been made (can't say that about the other guy

it's safe to say it got a little heated but i stopped it before it went any further the following week my hours where cut (only getting 23 hours this week) and the amount of days i work was also cut (3 days off) when asked if they needed me in other departments they said no and i quote "We're fully staffed now thank you" (i told her "I've heard that one before" jokingly of course)

so after 15 years this is what asking for a little respect gets ya (ie )

Sounds like they think you were trying to make yourself out as indispensable, and so they chose to prove otherwise by dispensing with you. Sounds rather petty of them, I would agree.

Sadly, I've decided that it is never a good idea to TELL the boss they can't do without you. Showing it is OK, but telling them never does any good.

Either they are aware and appreciate it, in which case you probably don't have any reason to remind them, or else they are aware, but don't want to hear it, and will react to it the way you experienced, by trying to prove you wrong, or else they are genuinely unaware even though they SHOULD be aware, in which case they don't usually enjoy having you point that out.

Sadly, in a retail situation, (which is what this sounds like, I apologize if I'm wrong) nobody is REALLY indispensable, no matter how good they are. There are always more people waiting in the wings for a job, and sadly I think most retailers (maybe not some of the smaller, less corporate ones) would rather have an inexperienced worker than an experienced one that seemed like they thought they deserved better, because they aren't willing to GIVE better.

yeah i've been joking with everyone (so much so i'm sure the boss has heard) that i'm so far down the sh!t-list that they hired 2 new people so that when it hits the fan and they need me again (ie this isn't my 1st rodeo) they've got back-up

Retail is a thankless job that slowly syphons away your very soul. Sadly, the way it's usually structured, hard work doesn't pay dividens, but kissing management's ass does. I learned that the hard way from working a great many years in retail.

How is it that you've been there for 15 years, but you're not in management? The key is to work your way into management so you're not the one constantly getting crapped on.

go read #5, i was one of them once, a MOD, then a key-holder now i'm the highest paid part-timer they've got

(if you must know it went part-timer 1st, then MOD (full-time), then full-time (it's backwards i know), then Key-holder (also full-time), then do to some b/s back down to part-timer)

15 years I worked security in various positions. From Private Protection duty to on site Uniformed both Visible/Roving, to plain clothes investigative. The one thing I learned in all of that. If your not a member of "Office Staff" regardless of position held and amount of work/effort put in. You are just another Body for them to fill a shift.

The Personal Protective duty assignments were the only times I had any pull, because the people I was assigned to had the clout to make trouble higher up if they felt they needed to. And I made sure I got on the friendly side of all of them.

Though in a couple of cases that took some doing. In one case, a well known rock star (80's 90's mostly) had me assigned to him for a tour. Day I met him his exact quote was "How is this lanky girl supposed to keep me safe" ... if he planned on saying anything after that I don't know .. 0.5 seconds after the last word he was face down and struggling to breath .. he ever uttered another word of complaint or questioned by ability to keep him and those around him as safe as possible.

And don't ask I won't say who it was, I'm not working anymore but I still considered some of my former clients privacy sacrosanct.

Long time no see. Welcome back!

Assaulting a client...that's an unusual move.

Don't get me wrong, it makes a GREAT story, and obviously I don't have the experience you had to determine (correctly, I hardly need to add) that it was the right move at the time, but USUALLY that's the sort of thing one would expect to get you FIRED from a job.

I was thinking that too, but I assume she either did it in such a way or read the client in such a way that she knew it was the best way to go.

I worked for that tobacco chain for six years and never got anywhere. After three I didn't get another raise and for the last several months they knocked me down to part time so an unqualified manager could get more time in to be more qualified. In my experience it's always been more of a "who you know" than "what you know" and I've seen unqualified idiots move ahead simply because their noses were a little more brown and their smiles were a little bigger and faker.

For the record, three months after I quit they called me back and offered me a management spot [I ran the store for nine months without a manager before they hired the idiot who cut my hours]. I told them to go f*** themselves.

Here it is: They thought they had you in their pocket.

Have you ever had an apartment where you've lived for years but couldn't get the landlord to replace the carpet and the draperies? But then as soon as you moved out, he did that so he could attract a new tenant? As if all that rent money you paid him didn't mean anything, but a new guy who has never paid him a penny was somehow entitled to good service.

That's the mentality of those in charge. By staying there for 15 years, you sent the message that you needed them -- and by implication, that they didn't need to do anything for you.

What makes people jump is to show them your willingness and ability to walk away. When they're confident you won't do that, you drop off their radar.

And by continuing to work there, you're continuing to send them that same message.

When your working for a major corporate entity of any kind, Retail, Wholesale, Finance whatever, 2 things are always the same. #1) Coworkers are always lazy and get away with everything you can't. #2) if you don't have your own office with a 3 letter abbreviation before your name on the plaque on the door, your considered filler for a position to be a mindless robot and do as told.

Which is why I am very glad to be a stay at home mother now. My only bosses are 6yrs old and I can send them to bed if they yell at me.

I honestly recommend, Open a E-trade account or another do it your self investment site of your choice. Save up around $5k to start with and buy some safe stocks, Apple, Microsoft, Johnson & Johnson, Nike and the like, and let those build value for 24 months then sell them. Doubling or tippling the money then rolling those profits into a Roth IRA (tax free). Its one of the easiest way to build a nest egg. And after a few years of doing that you can do a lot of profit taking with little to no tax liability.

90% of our income comes from our investments and interest earned on our banking accounts. I know putting that kind of money back for some can be hard, but its worth doing. And giving up some expenses to do it are also worth it. You don't need a Iphone with a data plan if you have home internet, get a burner pay as you go phone. Fast food can go away and you can cook more at home. Stuff like that to cut expenses to a point where you can put money away without having to pick and choose between saving and eating.

Its all about budgeting and prioritizing what it is you want your money to do for you.
