Ronnie Spector, the cat-eyed, bee-hived rock ‘n’ roll siren who sang such 1960s hits as “Be My Baby,” “Baby I Love You” and “Walking in the Rain” as the leader of the girl group The Ronettes, has died. She was 78.

Spector died Wednesday after a brief battle with cancer, her family said. “Ronnie lived her life with a twinkle in her eye, a spunky attitude, a wicked sense of humor and a smile on her face. She was filled with love and gratitude,” a statement said. No other details were revealed.

Tributes flooded social media, from Stevie Van Zandt saying it was an honor to produce her, to Brian Wilson, who wrote on Twitter: “I loved her voice so much and she was a very special person and a dear friend.” Diane Warren called her “The voice of a million teenage dreams including mine.”

The Ronettes’ sexy look and powerful voices — plus songwriting and producing help from Phil Spector — turned them into one of the premier acts of the girl-group era, touring England with The Rolling Stones and befriending the Beatles.

It's sad to see Ronnie go. She deserved better than a marriage to Psycho Phil, but apparently she recovered well from that.

I like a lot of the girl bands of the early 60s, but the Ronettes were top of the line.

French director Jean-Jacques Beineix died on Friday following a long illness, his family announced. He was 75 years old. He had signed significant films of the 80s: Diva, which had won him a César, The Moon in the Gutter or the adaptation of the novel by Philippe Djian, 37°2 in the morning. He offered his first role to Béatrice Dalle, turned Yves Montand, Gérard Depardieu or Richard Bohringer.

After working with René Clément, Claude Berri and Claude Zidi, Jean-Jacques Beineix meets with success from his first feature film, in 1980 : Diva. It is a thriller with a very polished aesthetic, made of blue light, dark scenes and surprising decorative elements, such as a pink American car in the middle of a loft, which makes it an emblematic film of the 1980s look.

In Diva, music plays a big role. Film buffs fondly remember the aria from La Wally, performed by opera singer Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez. She plays this diva who never consented to have her voice recorded and gets a recording stolen. For this movie, Beineix receives the César for best first work.

Jordan Cashmyer, whose struggles as a teeage homeless mother were detailed by MTV, has died in Maryland at 26. Her death was confirmed by her mother in a Facebook post. No cause was given by a medical examiner cited in numerous reports.

MTV aired its 16 and Pregnant segment on Cashmyer and boyfriend Derek Taylor in 2014. She had been disowned by her family, who did not approve of the relationship and the duo became homeless when Taylor was unable to secure employment. She eventually gave birth to a daughter, Evie.

The two broke up after the show’s filming ended, but the struggles continued. Cashmyer’s father died, and eventually Jordan Cashmyer signed over custody rights in 2015 on a temporary basis to boyfriend Derek’s mother.

Dallas Frazier, the songwriter behind such country hits as The Oak Ridge Boys’ “Elvira,” The Hollywood Argyles’ “Alley Oop” and Emmylou Harris’ “Beneath Still Waters,” has died, according to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s CEO Kyle Young. He was 82.

“Dallas Frazier is among the greatest country songwriters of all time. He could convey infectious fun with ‘Elvira,’ and then write something as stunningly sad and true as ‘Beneath Still Waters.’ His songs helped Connie Smith to become a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame,” said Young in a statement published the Country Music Hall of Fame’s official website. “He was a man of kindness, generosity and faith, who overcame a hardscrabble upbringing to offer smiling gifts to all of us. He lived a beautiful life of a beautiful mind.”

Ralph Emery, the country music disc jockey and television host who came to prominence on Nashville’s WSM, died on Saturday of natural causes, while surrounded by family at Nashville’s Tristar Centennial Medical Center, his son Michael told AP. He was 88.

Among those paying tribute to Emery today was “American Pie” singer-songwriter Don McLean. “Ralph Emery was my friend. I did his show many times and he was kind enough to send me a Christmas card every year. He had that special country music knowledge and that voice,” McLean said in a statement provided by his publicist. “Ralph was to country music what Mel Allen was to the Yankees.”

                  Not THAT Michael Jackson.

                  https://deadline.com/2022/01/michael...87-1234913413/

Michael Jackson, the Los Angeles talk radio personality who spent 32 years at KABC Radio and was syndicated on the ABC Radio Network for nearly a decade, died peacefully today at his LA home after a decade-long battle with Parkinson’s disease, a family spokesperson tells Deadline. He was 87.

“The world knew and adored our Michael Jackson. But Michael’s home was California, Los Angeles, America,” said Jackson’s frequent radio guest, former California Senator Barbara Boxer in a statement. “For that we are grateful.”

During Jackson’s time at KABC between 1966 and 1998, he interviewed hundreds of public figures including Presidents Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, along with Heads of State, governors, senators, A-List film and TV stars, authors, musicians, singers and artists.

Fred Parris, the songwriter whose “In The Still of the Night” became one of doo-wop’s most memorable songs, has died at age 85 after what was termed a brief illness. The group’s Facebook page announced his death Friday, although it is unclear when he died. .

“The Five Satins family is devastated by this loss but appreciative of having shared Fred’s music with thousands of fans and friends,” the group said.

The song didn’t chart highly upon its first release, but grew in the years after to personify the era of vocal groups thanks to constant radio airplay. It has been recorded by such artists as Boyz II Men and Debbie Gibson, and has been featured in such films as The Buddy Holly Story, Dirty Dancing and The Irishman.
The group noted Parris’ classic song “has been recognized as one of the greatest love songs of all-time and the number one requested song of the doo-wop era.”

“In the Still of the Night” is sometimes stylized as “In the Still of the Nite” to avoid confusion with a 1937 Cole Porter song with the same title.

Rosa Lee Hawkins, whose group the Dixie Cups bumped the Beatles off the No. 1 position on the charts in 1964 with their hit “Chapel of Love,” died Tuesday at age 76 in Tampa, FL.

She was 76 and passed from internal bleeding resulting from complications during surgery at Tampa General Hospital, according to her sister, Barbara Ann Hawkins, who was also a member of the group.

“Chapel of Love” was the debut single from the Dixie Cups, and replaced the Beatles “Love Me Do” as No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song had a bit of a revival on the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 Vietnam War film, Full Metal Jacket.

Robert Allan Ackerman, the director whose television work scored five Emmy nominations and who directed acclaimed Broadway productions including Bent and Extremities, died Jan. 10 of kidney failure at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. He was 77.

His death was announced by family through a spokesman.

“I love Bob. I loved being around him, his aurora, his steady peace,” said actor Al Pacino, who starred in Ackerman’s 1992 Broadway staging of Oscar Wilde’s Salome. “To work with him was joyous. He understood the language of theater art and communicated it with such ease. His gift was intangible and there’s no way of understanding how he created. When an artist has that special gift it is unexplainable, it just happens. When he stopped directing, he started writing again and his writing also had that same magic. He will be missed.”

Jana Bennett, the British and U.S. TV powerhouse who ran BBC TV, BBC Worldwide and History, has died aged 66.

Bennett was open about her rare condition glioblastoma multiforme in an interview with London’s Evening Standard in 2019, at which point she revealed she had become a trustee of OurBrainBank, a cancer research app allowing GBM patients to share their symptoms with clinicians.

BBC Director General Tim Davie said: “Jana Bennett was one of the most talented television producers of her generation and a formidable champion of public service broadcasting. She was a trailblazer who rose to the top of the industry, tirelessly championing upcoming talent, as well as having the foresight to bring together television and digital services. She was a brilliant and gifted colleague and is a big loss to the television industry.”
