      • ^Oh my goodness. He was missing for a while, but none of the dirt sheets even hinted something that serious (just assumed he was on one of those quarantines because of coming in contact with someone). He had such a great resurgence on AEW. Horrible.

So sorry to hear that. And my age too.

The metal scene prizes people who take time to become experts on niche subjects. Mike “McBeardo” McPadden was the expert’s expert—and by all accounts, one of the true good guys. Over the course of his legendary zine Happyland and two well-received books for Bazillion Points—Heavy Metal Movies and Teen Movie Hell—he explored the finer points of niche cinema with a dedication and passion that few could muster. McPadden also spent time working for Larry Flynt Publications as a staff writer. His attention to exhaustive detail is something everyone at a magazine that writes 5,000-word stories on albums the rest of the world forgets can appreciate.

Sadly, McPadden died in his Chicago home this week. A cause of death was not released but McPadden apparently passed in his sleep. Bazillion Points will donate proceeds of all sales of a box set of both of his books and Daniel Ekeroth’s Swedish film omnibus to a fund for Mike’s wife Rachel and his family. A GoFundMe is also raising money for Rachel.

Phil Niekro, a pitcher who used his signature knuckleball to fool generations of hitters as well as craft a Hall of Fame career, died Saturday night in his sleep after a long battle with cancer, the Atlanta Braves announced Sunday. He was 81.

Niekro, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1997, was one of baseball's most prolific and durable pitchers, using his "butterfly" pitch to win 318 games in a career that spanned 24 seasons, 20 of those years with the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves.

I listened to on a couple of podcasts within the last year. He's a big "80's, 80's, 80s" writer as you might expect. Learning about his death was genuinely shocking and random.

People around the world were familiar with author and professor James Gunn, who had earned the nickname of the “Dad of Science Fiction.”

But by age 97, he had also become the “granddad and the great granddad” of the genre, according to his colleague and close friend.

“A lot of people who are writers now took classes from somebody who took classes from somebody who took classes from him,” Kij Johnson explained.

Gunn, a professor emeritus at the University of Kansas English department and the founding director of what would come to be known as the Gunn Center for the Study of Science Fiction, died Wednesday morning after going to the hospital a few nights before and being diagnosed with congestive heart failure, according to an obituary on the center’s website.

Residuals in perpetuity for actors didn't start until the 1970-71 season, which was after Gilligan's Island had ceased production.

Russell Johnson, who played the Professor, was broke and driving a beaten-up old car in his later years. Can you imagine how rich the regulars on that show would have gotten if they had been paid permanent residuals?
