It's an inaccurate analogy and the only people who say it with any kind of conviction or sincerity are bitter nerds who repeat it to convince themselves that playing roleplaying games isn't boring as shit and a complete waste of not only time but also creative energy.

I don't think they're secretly bored. I've known some D&Ders (not me) and they don't strike me as secretly bored. I do think, however, that it is defensive.
