  • Inkers, Colorists, and Letterers

I recently read a comic where the writer also did the lettering and it got me thinking about how rarely I pay attention to any of the names in comic credits after pencils.

So, I'm curious if anybody else does pay attention to inkers, colorists, and letterers. Can you spot certain people's work? Do you have favorites? Do you remember or even follow some names?

Dave Stewart is the current master of colorist for comics, Matt Wilson is a rising star in the coloring world. Val Staples is another excellent colorist.

I always wondered what the difference was between inker and colorist

I was rereading Batwoman Elegy last nigh and Dave's work was amazing

Inkers basically give definition to a pencilers line.

Colorist can do the lighting, and give a tone to any given scene, plus they color

Colorists are definitely the unsung heroes.

I probably notice color when it goes wrong. A colorist can screw up good pencils. For that matter, so can an inker. This is probably why some artists (at least in the past) have done their own inks.

I only know Jared Fletcher because he does DMZ and his lettering is hit and miss, so I bothered to flip pages back and see who had done it. Also I see Chris Elleopolus(i know I destroyed the spelling of his ridiculous name) in a lot of marvel books.

I know a lot of inkers and colorists by name but only Dave Stewart by sight.

So...he has nice handwriting or what?

No, they are not. Lettering is more difficult than it seems.

If you read Sandman, then you would know what I am talking about.

I remember reading this some where or something like this.
                              Writer-Singer
                              Pencils-Lead Guitarist
                              Inker-Drumer
                              Colorist-Bass
                              Letterer-sound tech

From what I have heard letterer is the toughest job, with the least amount of respect.
